This free typing test measures how fast and how accurately you type, right in your browser. It works on a laptop, a desktop or a phone, there is nothing to download and no account to create. Type a short passage and you get your words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and a clear idea of what to practise next. You can test yourself in English, take a typing test in Hindi with Mangal (Inscript) or Remington GAIL, or switch to more than 40 other languages.
How to take a typing test online (typing test kaise kare)
Click the text box, or just start pressing keys. The clock starts with your first letter, so take a breath and place your fingers first. Type each word as it appears and press Space to move on. A red letter means a mistake; you can fix it with Backspace or leave it and keep going – both choices count against your accuracy, but fixing it costs you time.
Two keys save you a lot of clicking: Tab gives you a new test with fresh text, and Esc restarts the one you are on. If you learn best by seeing your hands, turn on the on-screen keyboard. Every key is coloured by the finger that should press it, and animated hands show which finger to use next, so this doubles as a typing test with finger position guidance for beginners.
Choose your test: time, words, paragraph or your own text
The bar above the typing box lets you shape the test to what you need:
- Time: 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 minutes. A 60 seconds test is the classic quick check; a 5 or 10 minute run shows your real stamina and is closer to exam conditions.
- Words: 10, 25, 50 or 100 words, for when you want a fixed amount of text instead of a fixed time.
- Paragraph and quote: real sentences with capitals and full stops, the style used in a paragraph test for jobs and exams.
- Numbers and code: a number test for figures and data entry, and a code mode for programmers.
- Custom text: paste any passage and take a test with your own words, such as a letter you type at work.
Punctuation and numbers are off by default, which gives you a plain WPM test without punctuation. Turn them on when you are ready for harder text. The stop-on-error option will not let you move past a wrong letter, and blind mode hides mistakes until the end – useful if you keep glancing back at errors.
How your typing speed test results are calculated
We use the standard definition used by nearly every typing speed test online: one "word" is five characters, spaces included. That way a passage with long words and one with short words are scored fairly.
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Raw WPM = (all typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Your result screen also shows CPM (characters per minute, which is simply correct characters divided by minutes) and consistency, a score that is high when your speed stays steady from second to second and low when you speed up and stall.
A worked example
Say you take a 2 minute test and type 460 characters, of which 440 are correct. Your net speed is (440 ÷ 5) ÷ 2 = 44 WPM. Your raw speed is (460 ÷ 5) ÷ 2 = 46 WPM. If you pressed 470 keys in total and 446 of them were right, your accuracy is 446 ÷ 470 = about 94.9%. Your CPM is 440 ÷ 2 = 220. The gap between raw and net speed (2 WPM here) is the price of your mistakes.
What is a good score on a typing test?
Most adults type at about 40 WPM. Here is a rough guide to read your typing test results against; the figures are typical ranges, not strict rules.

Aim for at least 95% accuracy before you chase speed. For a job application or a WPM test for your resume, quote your net WPM together with accuracy, for example "58 WPM at 97% accuracy". See the full tables by age and job on our average typing speed page.
Typing test in Hindi, English and 40+ languages
Change the language in the test bar and the words change with it. For a Hindi typing test you choose the keyboard layout: Inscript for Mangal font and other Unicode text, or Remington GAIL, which follows the Kruti Dev typewriter layout many Indian exams still use. You do not need a Hindi keyboard or a special font installed – the site maps your ordinary English keys to Devanagari, and the on-screen keyboard shows every letter. Typing speed test for exams: SSC, RRB NTPC, CPCT and courts
Many Indian government jobs include a skill test in which you type a passage for a fixed time. The general test on this page is great for daily practice, while our government exam typing test simulator copies the real rules: exam passage, exam timer, backspace on or off, and marks worked out with full and half mistakes. As per recent notifications (always check the official notice for your exam):
- What is the typing test in SSC CGL? In SSC CGL it is the Data Entry Speed Test (DEST), which is compulsory only for posts such as Tax Assistant: 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes (8,000 per hour). Other CGL posts have a Computer Proficiency Test instead, so a typing test is not compulsory for every CGL post.
- SSC CHSL: 10 minutes, 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi for LDC/JSA and PA/SA posts.
- What is the typing test in RRB NTPC? For clerk-cum-typist posts it is a 10 minute test at 30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi, with Backspace disabled – so practise a typing test without backspace.

Too slow? Learn, practise and play
A single result tells you where you are; practice moves the number. If you are a beginner or type with two fingers, start with our free touch typing lessons, which begin on the home row (F and J first) and add a few keys at a time. The result screen also lists the keys you missed most, with a button that builds a practice drill from exactly those keys.
If drills feel dull, try the typing games: Word Rain, Space Typer, Typing Race, Word Zombies and Balloon Pop, a gentle game for kids where the balloon colour shows the finger to use. Children can take this typing test for kids too – pick the 10 or 25 word mode for a short, friendly round.
Make it comfortable: keyboard, sound, theme and font
Open settings to pick a keyboard sound (thock, clicky, typewriter, soft, bubble or off), a theme (paper, night, chalkboard, sepia, mint or high contrast) and a font, including an easy-to-read font for people with dyslexia. The typing speed test on mobile works with your phone's keyboard; your score will usually be lower than on a physical keyboard, so compare phone results with phone results.

Free typing test with certificate
After any test, press Get certificate to create a PNG or PDF showing your name, date, net WPM and accuracy from that result. It is free and generated from your own score on this site, so it is a practice certificate, not an official qualification – but it is handy for a portfolio or to show a teacher or employer your progress.
How to pass a typing speed test and increase your score
- Warm up first. Two or three short runs loosen your fingers; your first attempt of the day is rarely your best.
- Read one word ahead. While your fingers type the current word, your eyes should already be on the next one.
- Protect accuracy. Each error costs you the error itself plus the time to fix it. Slow down by 10% if you are under 95%.
- Do not look at the keys. Use the on-screen keyboard instead; looking down breaks your rhythm.
- Practise at the real length. If your exam lasts 10 minutes, a 1 minute sprint will overstate your speed. Train at the full time.
- Train your weak keys. Ten focused minutes a day on your slowest keys beats an hour of random typing once a week.
