This CPCT score calculator does the arithmetic of the CPCT typing scorecard for you. Enter the correct and wrong words from any practice test, plus the minutes, and it returns net words per minute (NWPM), gross words per minute (GWPM), accuracy, the official score band and a qualified or not qualified verdict. CPCT typing speed formula
The official CPCT assessment formula works in whole words, split at each space. A word is correct only if it matches the passage word in the same position exactly.
GWPM = (correct words + wrong words) ÷ time in minutes
NWPM = correct words ÷ time in minutes
Accuracy % = NWPM × 100 ÷ GWPM
Only NWPM appears on the scorecard. There is no error-percentage deduction of the kind SSC uses: a wrong word earns nothing and costs nothing more. The time is 15 minutes if the timer runs out, or the time you actually took if you typed the whole passage and submitted early.

CPCT passing marks in the typing test: qualifying speed and score bands
How much typing speed is required in CPCT? The CPCT qualifying marks for typing are speeds, not marks: you qualify at 30 NWPM in English and 20 NWPM in Hindi, as per the CPCT Rule Book and the GAD clarification of 2018. Above that, your NWPM is converted to a scaled score:

The bands are whole numbers, so the calculator uses the whole part of your NWPM when it picks a band: 29.9 NWPM in English counts as 29 and is not qualified. Do not plan on rounding up. You may read "Hindi 25 WPM" on some sites; that is the standard for other exams, not the CPCT passing criteria.
Worked examples
English, full 15 minutes
You typed 520 words: 480 correct and 40 wrong. NWPM = 480 ÷ 15 = 32.0. GWPM = 520 ÷ 15 ≈ 34.7. Accuracy = 32.0 × 100 ÷ 34.7 ≈ 92%. Result: Qualified, 50%. To reach 60% you need 41 NWPM, which is +9 NWPM or 135 more correct words in 15 minutes.
English, submitted early
You typed all 550 words in 13.5 minutes, with 530 correct and 20 wrong. NWPM = 530 ÷ 13.5 ≈ 39.3. GWPM = 550 ÷ 13.5 ≈ 40.7. Accuracy ≈ 96%. Result: Qualified, 50%, and only +2 NWPM short of 60%. Finishing early helps because the time taken is smaller.
Hindi, full 15 minutes
You typed 336 words: 300 correct and 36 wrong. NWPM = 300 ÷ 15 = 20.0. GWPM = 336 ÷ 15 = 22.4. Accuracy = 20.0 × 100 ÷ 22.4 ≈ 89%. Result: Qualified, 50%, but with no margin. With 285 correct words instead, NWPM would be 19.0 and the result would be Not qualified; 15 more correct words would have changed it.
Why accuracy beats raw speed
Someone typing 60 GWPM at 50% accuracy scores 30 NWPM, exactly the same as someone typing a careful 32 GWPM at about 94%. Most lost words in CPCT come from one skipped or extra word that shifts every word after it, so steady, accurate typing wins. Try both cases in the calculator above.
What is the CPCT score card?
The official CPCT scorecard shows three separate results:
- Computer proficiency (MCQ): your marks out of 75 and the percentage.
- English typing: your NWPM, the scaled percentage and Qualified or Not qualified.
- Hindi typing: your NWPM, the scaled percentage and Qualified or Not qualified.
It also has a skill suitability matrix with four combinations (computer proficiency only, with Hindi typing, with English typing, or with both), which shows the kinds of posts your result suits, and a QR code. For Assistant Grade-3 and equivalent posts, computer proficiency plus Hindi typing at 20 NWPM is required; English typing is not mandatory for them. The scorecard is valid for 7 years from the exam date (it used to be 2 years). CPCT passing marks out of 75 (the MCQ, or theory, section; in Hindi: 75 में से 38)
The MCQ section has 75 questions of 1 mark each, with no negative marking. The passing marks are 50%, which is 38 out of 75. Passing marks for the CPCT exam are counted separately for each part: you can qualify in the MCQ and Hindi typing but not English, and that result still suits posts that need only Hindi typing. Departments may ask for higher scores than the minimum, so check the recruitment notice. The CPCT passing marks out of 75 are set in the official Rule Book, a PDF on the CPCT portal.
How do you calculate your typing speed outside CPCT?
Most typing tests, including the ones on this site, use a different unit: a "word" is 5 characters, so WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. That makes long words count for more, while CPCT counts every word as one, however long. Your CPCT NWPM can therefore differ a little from your normal WPM. For the standard typing speed calculator formula, use the WPM calculator. What is the average typing speed? For adults it is about 40 WPM, which is enough for CPCT English if your accuracy is high. Typing speed by age varies a lot, but CPCT uses the same qualifying speed for every candidate, whatever the age.
