What makes typing Polish different
Polish adds nine letters to the Latin alphabet: ą ć ę ł ń ó ś ź ż. They matter for meaning – być (to be) and byc are not the same word to a reader – and they are frequent: się, że, ją and już appear in almost every sentence. Polish also loves consonant clusters: szcz, rz, cz, dz, prz, as in przyszłość or szczęście. Clusters like these reward finger rolls across the keyboard.
What really sets Polish apart is the keyboard. Almost everyone in Poland types on the Polish programmer layout (polski programisty): a normal US QWERTY keyboard where the Polish letters come from holding the right Alt key, called AltGr. So your hands stay on the familiar QWERTY positions and the thumb adds AltGr when a Polish letter is needed.
What does a Polish keyboard look like?
It looks like an English keyboard. Keyboards sold in Poland are standard US QWERTY; some show the Polish letters as small extra labels, many do not. The difference is in the system setting "Polish (Programmers)". An older "Polish (214)" typewriter layout with QWERTZ letter order also exists, but it is rarely used today.

ź is on X because ż, the more common letter, took Z. With the built-in layout, Ctrl+Alt+letter works the same as AltGr+letter. Use it if AltGr does nothing: on a computer set to the US layout the right Alt key often acts as a plain Alt. The left Alt key alone does not type Polish letters.
Typing Polish on an English keyboard
- Your own Polish keyboard setting. If "Polish (Programmers)" is installed on your computer, keep the default option and type as usual.
- The built-in Polish programmer layout. Choose "Polish (Programmer)" in the Keyboard menu. Any keyboard – UK, US, even one set to another language – then gives ą, ę, ł and the rest with AltGr, without changing your system settings. The on-screen keyboard shows each key coloured by finger, and the animated hands show which finger to use.
On a phone (test pisania na telefonie) the built-in layout is off. Use your phone keyboard with Polish added, and hold a letter such as a, e or z to pick ą, ę, ż or ź.

Many people write without Polish letters in quick messages, so a test pisania bez polskich znaków is a common search. Znaków na minutę and WPM
Polish typing courses count characters per minute (znaków na minutę); international tests use words per minute, where one word is five characters. This test shows both:
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Znaków na minutę = correct characters ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Worked example: in a 2 minute test pisania na czas you type 400 characters and 380 are correct. That is 380 ÷ 2 = 190 znaków na minutę, or (380 ÷ 5) ÷ 2 = 38 WPM. Your raw speed is (400 ÷ 5) ÷ 2 = 40 WPM, and with 380 correct keystrokes out of 400 your accuracy is 95%.

How long touch typing takes depends on practice time. With 15–30 minutes a day, most people learn every key position in about two to four weeks, and reach a comfortable 40 WPM (200 znaków na minutę) in a few months. - Learn the letter keys first, then add AltGr letters one by one: ę and ą first, since they are the most common.
- Press AltGr with your right thumb so both hands stay on the home row.
