CPM test: measure your characters per minute

Type for one minute to get your characters per minute, plus WPM and accuracy. Below you can turn CPM into keystrokes per hour for data entry jobs and exams.

A CPM test measures how many characters you type correctly in one minute. Characters per minute is a finer measure than words per minute: it counts every letter, space and punctuation mark, so it is the number data entry employers, keystroke-based exams and many European typing courses prefer. This free test runs for 60 seconds and shows your CPM next to your WPM, accuracy and raw speed.

What is a CPM test and what does CPM measure?

CPM stands for characters per minute. In a CPM test for typing, every character you type correctly counts: letters, numbers, punctuation and the space after each word. Your result on this site is net CPM – correct characters only – so mistakes lower it.

You will also see two related measures:

  • Keystrokes per minute (KPM): every key you press, right or wrong, including Backspace and Shift where counted. Some keystrokes per minute tests count raw keys; ours reports correct characters, which is fairer.
  • Keystrokes per hour (KPH or KDPH): keystrokes per minute × 60. Indian exams such as SSC use "key depressions per hour", and data entry jobs usually quote KPH.

CPM test kya hota hai? Full form and meaning in Hindi

The CPM test full form is "characters per minute test". In Hindi you could say it measures kitne akshar prati minute aap sahi type karte hain. The CPM typing test meaning is the same in every language: correct characters divided by minutes. It is used for data entry hiring, keyboard skill checks in schools and typing courses in India and Europe, where "letters per minute" is a common way to express speed – a letters per minute typing test and a CPM test are the same thing.

Keystrokes per hour meaning: the number of keys you would press in an hour at your current pace. Nobody types for a full hour in a test; the figure is scaled up from a short test so that jobs can compare candidates. The keystrokes per hour average for office workers is roughly 10,000–12,000, which matches 35–40 WPM.

A quick note on names: "CPM" also means clicks per minute (a mouse test), a psychology test and several certifications. This page is only about typing speed.

How is CPM calculated?

CPM = correct characters ÷ minutes

WPM = CPM ÷ 5

Keystrokes per hour = keystrokes per minute × 60

Worked example: in a one-minute CPM test you type 238 correct characters. Your CPM is 238. Your WPM is 238 ÷ 5 = 47.6, shown as about 48 WPM. You pressed 252 keys in that minute, so your raw keystroke rate is 252 × 60 = 15,120 keystrokes per hour. Of those 252 keys, 240 were right, so accuracy is 240 ÷ 252 = about 95.2%.

For a longer test, divide by the minutes: 1,100 correct characters in 5 minutes is 220 CPM, or 44 WPM.

CPM to WPM to keystrokes per hour

How do you calculate keystrokes per hour from WPM? Multiply WPM by 5 to get CPM, then by 60. This chart does the maths for common speeds (it assumes one keystroke per character, which is close for plain lower-case text):

WPMCPMKeystrokes per hour
301509,000
3517510,500
4020012,000
5025015,000
6030018,000
7035021,000
8040024,000

So the keystrokes per hour for 40 WPM are about 12,000, for 60 WPM about 18,000 and for 80 WPM about 24,000. Going the other way, keystrokes per hour to words per minute is KPH ÷ 60 ÷ 5: 10,000 KPH is about 33 WPM. For any other figures, use the WPM calculator.

What is a normal CPM, and what is a good keystrokes per hour?

The average characters per minute for adults is about 200 CPM (40 WPM). These are typical, approximate levels:

  • Under 150 CPM: beginner.
  • 150–250 CPM: normal, everyday typing.
  • 250–350 CPM: good to fast; data entry and admin level.
  • 350+ CPM: professional typist speed.

For data entry jobs, a good keystrokes per hour rate is commonly quoted at 8,000–10,000 KPH for mixed text, and more for pure number work – checked on a 10-key typing test. In India, SSC's data entry tests ask for 8,000 key depressions per hour (15,000 for some DEO Grade A posts), and the SSC CHSL typing test's 35 WPM equals 10,500 key depressions per hour, as per recent notifications – always check the official notice for your exam.

When CPM is more useful than WPM

  • Data entry and numbers: codes, figures and short fields do not fit the idea of "words", so keystrokes and characters are the natural unit. Practise number-heavy text on the data entry typing test.
  • Languages with long or short words: German compounds and Hindi matras make "words" uneven. In a CPM test in Hindi, each vowel sign and halant is a separate character, so characters give a fairer picture.
  • Tracking small gains: going from 40 to 41 WPM looks tiny, but it is 5 more characters every minute. CPM shows progress more finely.

How to check CPM and practise

How to check CPM here: take the one-minute test at the top of the page and read the "Characters / min" figure on your result. The CPM test scoring counts only correct characters, so it matches what employers call net keystrokes. For a CPM practice test with harder text, turn on punctuation and numbers in the test bar; for number-only work, a keystrokes per minute test on the 10 key numeric keypad is on our 10-key page. Any normal keyboard works – laptop or desktop – and there is nothing to install. If you need to turn a result into KPH, the keystrokes per hour calculator on the WPM calculator page does it in one step.

How to raise your CPM

  1. Use every finger. Touch typing spreads the work across ten fingers; two-finger typists rarely pass 200 CPM.
  2. Do not forget the spacebar. Spaces are about one character in six. Hit the spacebar with your thumb, in rhythm, not as a pause.
  3. Drill your slowest keys. Your result lists the keys you missed; practise those for five minutes a day.
  4. Add numbers and punctuation gradually. Real data entry text is full of them, and they are where CPM usually drops.

CPM Test: frequently asked questions

What does a CPM test measure?
It measures characters per minute: how many characters – letters, numbers, punctuation and spaces – you type correctly in one minute.
How is CPM calculated?
CPM = correct characters ÷ minutes. For example, 238 correct characters in one minute is 238 CPM. Divide CPM by 5 to get WPM.
How do I convert CPM to WPM?
Divide by 5. 200 CPM = 40 WPM, 300 CPM = 60 WPM. The ÷ 5 comes from the standard rule that one word equals five characters.
How do I calculate keystrokes per hour?
Multiply your keystrokes per minute by 60. From WPM, multiply by 5 and then by 60: 40 WPM ≈ 12,000 keystrokes per hour.
What is a normal CPM?
About 200 CPM (40 WPM) is normal for adults. 250–350 CPM is good to fast, and 350+ CPM is professional typist speed.
What is a good keystrokes per hour for data entry?
Around 8,000–10,000 KPH is a common requirement for general data entry, with higher targets for numeric keypad work. Check the job listing for the exact figure.
Does the spacebar count in a CPM test?
Yes. Spaces are characters too, so each correct space after a word adds to your CPM.
