This Russian typing test uses common Russian words and everyday sentences in Cyrillic, and it works even if your keyboard only has English letters. In Russian it is a тест скорости печати (typing speed test), touch typing is слепая печать – literally "blind typing" – and speed is usually quoted in знаков в минуту, characters per minute. What makes typing Russian different
Russian is written in Cyrillic, with 33 letters. On a keyboard that means every letter key of the three letter rows carries a Cyrillic letter, and a few extra keys too: х and ъ sit where English has the square brackets, ж and э where English has ; and ', and б and ю take over the comma and full-stop keys. So Russian uses more keys under the right little finger than English does.
The standard layout in Russia and most of the CIS is ЙЦУКЕН, named after its top row. It was designed so the most frequent letters – а, о, е, и, н, т – fall under the strongest fingers. Punctuation also moves: the full stop is at the bottom right of the letter rows and the comma is Shift + that key. The letter ё sits on its own key left of 1; many Russians write е instead, but this test uses ё where the dictionary does, so type it.
How to type in Russian letters here
There are two ways to take this тест скорости печати на клавиатуре:
- Your own Russian keyboard. If Russian is installed on your computer, keep the default option, switch your system language to Russian (often Alt+Shift or Win+Space on Windows) and type.
- The built-in ЙЦУКЕН layout. Choose "Russian (ЙЦУКЕН) — works on any keyboard" in the Keyboard menu. Your English keyboard then types Cyrillic: F gives а, J gives о, Q gives й, and so on, exactly where a Russian keyboard has them. You do not need Russian stickers – the on-screen keyboard shows every Cyrillic letter, coloured by finger, and the animated hands show which finger to use.
The built-in layout is the standard ЙЦУКЕН, not the "phonetic" layouts some learners use abroad (where я sits on Q). If you use a phonetic layout, keep your own keyboard. On a phone – тест скорости печати на телефоне – the built-in layout is switched off; add Russian to your phone keyboard and type as normal.

Your index fingers rest on А (the F key) and О (the J key). The home row reads ФЫВА on the left and ОЛДЖ on the right – Russian typing courses call it exactly that.
Знаков в минуту and WPM: how speed is measured
Russian typing trainers count characters per minute (знаков в минуту), while international sites count words per minute. One "word" is five characters including spaces, so the two convert easily:
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Characters per minute (знаков в минуту) = correct characters ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Worked example: in a 1 minute Russian typing test you type 240 characters and 230 are correct. That is 230 знаков в минуту, or 230 ÷ 5 = 46 WPM. Your raw speed is 240 ÷ 5 = 48 WPM, and with 230 correct keystrokes out of 240 your accuracy is about 95.8%.

A fast typing test result in Russian is 350 characters per minute or more; most people land in the average band on their first Russian keyboard speed test. These are typical ranges, not official standards. Typing test requirements for jobs vary: office roles often ask for about 200 знаков в минуту or more, and data-entry or secretarial jobs usually want higher. Types of typing test you can take in Russian
Examples of typing test formats you can run in Russian – from a 15 second Russian typing quiz to a 10 minute exam-style run:
- Timed: choose the typing test time – 15 or 30 seconds, 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 minutes.
- By words: 10, 25, 50 or 100 words.
- Without punctuation: the default word test is a тест скорости печати без знаков препинания – plain lowercase words. Turn on punctuation when you are ready.
- Paragraph and quote: real Russian text with capitals, commas and full stops.
- Numbers: typing test numbers mode, useful if your job involves figures.
- Custom: paste any Russian text into the custom typing test.
