This Marathi typing test gives you real Marathi passages in Devanagari and measures your speed and accuracy the standard way. In Marathi it is a मराठी टायपिंग टेस्ट, or more formally a मराठी टंकलेखन चाचणी. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in any browser, so you can practise for GCC-TBC, court and government typing tests at home on a PC or laptop.

Marathi typing fonts and keyboards: Mangal, Kruti Dev, ISM, Shivaji

Marathi is written in Devanagari, the same script as Hindi, but Marathi typists grew up with several font and keyboard systems. Knowing which one your exam uses matters more than anything else:

SystemKeyboard layoutUnicode?
Mangal, Lohit Marathi, Noto Sans DevanagariInscript (or phonetic)Yes
Kruti Dev 010 / 055, ShivajiRemington (typewriter style)No, legacy fonts
ISM (for example ISM V6)Inscript, Remington or phonetic, chosen inside ISMBoth, depending on the font chosen
AkrutiIts own layoutsMostly legacy fonts
Google Input ToolsPhonetic: type Marathi in English words (marathi → मराठी)Yes

This Marathi typing test offers built-in Inscript (Unicode), the same layout as a Mangal-font Marathi typing test, and your own keyboard. If you type with ISM, Windows' Marathi keyboard or Google Input, choose "My own Marathi keyboard" and make sure it writes Unicode. Kruti Dev and Shivaji text is not Unicode, so it won't match the passage. For Remington practice, use the Kruti Dev typing test, which has a built-in Remington GAIL layout (with Hindi passages).

The Marathi Inscript keyboard, key by key

Put your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. The home row gives you the matras on the left and the most common consonants on the right:

KeyASDFGHJKL;'
Normalि
Shift

Letters Marathi needs more than Hindi

  • ळ is Shift+N. It appears in everyday words such as वेळ, शाळा and बाळ, so learn it early. Plain ल is N without Shift.
  • The eyelash ऱ is Shift+J. Marathi uses it in forms like दुसऱ्या and वाऱ्याने: type ऱ, then ् (D), then य (/).
  • ज्ञ is Shift+5, common in ज्ञान and विज्ञान. क्ष is Shift+7, त्र Shift+6, श्र Shift+8.
  • Reph and ra-phala: र् (as in कार्य) is Shift+4 and ्र (as in प्रश्न) is Shift+3.
  • English loanwords: ॅ is Shift+2 and ऑ is Shift with the backslash key (for ऑफिस, बॅग).

Barakhadi and matras

A good first drill is the barakhadi: क का कि की कु कू के कै को कौ कं कः. On Inscript that is K followed by E, F, R, G, T, S, W, A, Q, X and Shift+- in turn. Always type the consonant first, then the matra, even for ि, which appears on the left. A Marathi barakhadi typing test like this, repeated for ग, त and स, trains every matra key in a few minutes.

For a full course, open typing lessons and choose "Marathi – Inscript (Devanagari)". It starts from the home row and adds two keys per lesson. The Mangal typing test uses the same Inscript layout with Hindi text.

Marathi typing tests for GCC-TBC, MPSC and court exams

Marathi typing is required for many jobs in Maharashtra, usually together with English:

  • GCC-TBC (Government Commercial Certificate – Typewriting Basic Course). Conducted by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination (MSCE), Pune, with speed levels such as Marathi 30 WPM and 40 WPM. Practice passages for it are commonly 7 minutes long, and the exam also includes letter and statement typing.
  • Clerk-typist posts (MPSC and other government recruitment). Many notices commonly ask for typing at about 30 WPM in Marathi and 40 WPM in English, backed by a GCC-TBC or similar certificate.
  • Bombay High Court and district courts. Bombay High Court and district court clerk and typist recruitment often includes a Marathi and English typing test on a computer; some rules deduct marks for word mistakes, and Backspace may be restricted.

Speed, duration, font (Unicode or Kruti Dev/ISM) and exam dates for 2025 and 2026 change by notice. Always check the official notification or the MSCE website before you set your target.

For a Marathi typing test at 30 WPM or 40 WPM over 7 minutes, the GCC-TBC style drill, pick Paragraph mode, start the 10 minute timer and note your speed at the 7 minute mark on the speed chart. To rehearse strict court-style marking with a pass/fail verdict, try the court typing test.

How your Marathi typing speed is calculated

Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

Every Unicode character counts, including matras, the halant (्) and the anusvara, plus the space after each correct word. So शाळा is four characters (श ा ळ ा) and ज्ञान is five (ज ् ञ ा न). Raw WPM counts every character typed, CPM is characters per minute, and consistency shows how even your pace was.

Worked example for a 30 WPM target: in a 7 minute passage you type 1,120 correct characters. Net speed = (1,120 ÷ 5) ÷ 7 = 32 WPM, which clears 30. If 1,190 characters were typed in all, accuracy is 1,120 ÷ 1,190 × 100 = about 94.1%, so the next goal is fewer mistakes rather than more speed.

How to learn Marathi typing at home

  1. Use 10 fingers from the start. A Marathi typing test with 10 fingers on the home row always overtakes two-finger typing within weeks.
  2. Daily 1 minute test: a Marathi typing test of 60 seconds is a warm-up that tells you today's speed and which keys are slow.
  3. Daily 5 minute test and a weekly 10 minute paragraph: a Marathi typing test paragraph of 5 minutes or 10 minutes builds the stamina a 7 minute exam needs.
  4. Drill weak keys: "Practise weak keys" on the result screen opens typing practice with Marathi words built from your mistakes.
  5. Mock test weekly: type one full passage with Backspace avoided, as if it were the real exam.

Marathi typing tips and rules to follow

  • Don't look at the keyboard; the on-screen keyboard shows each next key with its finger colour.
  • Type what is written, including punctuation like the comma and full stop (Marathi uses the full stop ".", not the danda).
  • Keep accuracy at 95% or better; in many exams each wrong word costs more than a slow word.
  • Want a break? The typing games work in Marathi too.

How to type Marathi in Word, on a laptop or phone

On this page you need nothing: Inscript is built in. To type Marathi in MS Word or anywhere else on Windows 10 or 11, add Marathi in Settings → Time & language → Language & region and pick the Marathi Inscript or phonetic keyboard; switch with Windows+Space. On a laptop without Devanagari key stickers, the on-screen keyboard here is the best way to learn the positions. On phones, add Marathi to Gboard; the test uses your phone keyboard automatically.

Your results are saved on My progress, and you can download a free typing certificate for any Marathi typing test result. It is a personal record, not a GCC-TBC certificate.
