This typing speed test gives you a reliable answer to one question: how fast do you type, and how many mistakes do you make doing it? It runs for 60 seconds by default and shows your results the moment the timer stops – speed in words per minute, accuracy, characters per minute and a second-by-second speed chart. It is free, it works in any browser, and your scores stay on your own device.
Check your typing speed in 60 seconds
"Where can I test my typing speed without signing up?" Right here. Start typing and the timer begins; after one minute your typing speed test results appear below the text. If one minute feels too short to be fair, change the time in the test bar: 30 seconds for a quick burst, 2 or 5 minutes for a steadier reading, or 10 minutes to copy exam conditions. You can also switch to a paragraph, add numbers or punctuation, or paste your own text.
A single one-minute run is a snapshot. For a number you can trust, take three tests and use the middle score, not the best one. That is also the honest figure to write on a job application.
What is a typing speed test and what does it measure?
A typing speed test times how quickly you copy text and checks every keystroke against the original. Speed and accuracy are reported separately because they tell you different things: speed shows how fluent your fingers are, accuracy shows how much control you have at that speed.
Net speed (WPM) = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ total keystrokes × 100
The ÷ 5 converts characters into standard "words", so scores stay comparable whatever the text. Raw speed uses all the characters you typed, including wrong ones, and CPM (characters per minute) is the correct characters per minute without the ÷ 5.
Example: reading your result
In one minute you type 265 characters and 250 of them match the text. Net speed = 250 ÷ 5 = 50 WPM. Raw speed = 265 ÷ 5 = 53 WPM. You pressed 272 keys and 256 were right, so accuracy = 256 ÷ 272 = about 94.1%. Your CPM is 250. The advice here would be simple: you have the finger speed for 50+, but 6% of your keys are wrong. Slowing down a touch would probably raise your net score.
What is a good typing test speed?
"Good" depends on what you need the skill for. These are typical requirements and ranges, so treat them as a guide and always check the actual job or exam notice.
| Use | Typical speed | Accuracy to aim for |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday typing, chat and email | 30–40 WPM | 90%+ |
| Office and admin jobs | 40–50 WPM | 95%+ |
| Data entry and virtual assistant work | 50–60 WPM, often measured in keystrokes per hour | 97%+ |
| Emergency call centres (911 dispatcher and similar) | often 35–45 WPM | 95%+ |
| Transcription and professional typists | 65–90+ WPM | 98%+ |
| Indian govt typing exams (SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC) | 25–35 WPM net | errors within the exam limit |
Is typing 40 WPM good? Yes – it is about the adult average and passes most office tests. Typing speed kitni honi chahiye for Indian exams? For SSC CHSL it is 35 WPM in English and 30 in Hindi; for the CPCT exam the qualifying level is about 30 net WPM in English. How to check typing speed on a laptop, computer or phone
People often ask how to check typing speed in MS Word or Notepad. Neither has a built-in speed checker: you would have to time yourself, count the words and then check each one for mistakes by hand. An online test does all of that for you, character by character, so it is faster and more accurate.
- Laptop: laptop keys are flatter with shorter travel. Most people score within a few WPM of their desktop speed once they are used to it. Keep your wrists off the trackpad so the cursor does not jump.
- Desktop computer: a full-size keyboard is where you will usually post your best numbers, and it is what exam centres use.
- Phone: the typing speed test on mobile works with your normal phone keyboard. Thumb typing is a different skill, so expect a lower score and do not compare it with keyboard results. Autocorrect can also change words, so turn it off for a fair test.
Typing speed test: how to improve (typing speed kaise badhaye)
How long does it take to type 60 WPM? From an average of about 40 WPM, many people get there in two to three months of short daily practice; complete beginners usually need longer, because they first have to learn touch typing. A simple four-week plan:
- Week 1 – fix your technique. Use the on-screen keyboard's finger colours and practise typing with correct finger position. Accept a lower score for now.
- Week 2 – accuracy only. Take daily one-minute tests and do not move on until you are above 95%.
- Week 3 – weak keys. After each test, press Practise weak keys. Our typing practice page builds drills from the letters you miss most.
- Week 4 – push the pace. Try to beat your average by 3–5 WPM while keeping 95% accuracy, then lengthen the test to 3 or 5 minutes.
Fifteen minutes a day works better than two hours at the weekend. Your saved results show whether the trend is going up.
Typing speed test for exams and jobs
Many employers test typing during hiring, and in India typing is a qualifying skill test for clerk and assistant posts. What is the data entry speed test in SSC CGL? It is the DEST: you type about 2,000 key depressions of English text in 15 minutes, which works out to 8,000 key depressions per hour. It applies to posts such as Tax Assistant, as per recent notifications – always check the official notice for your exam. Try the rules in our SSC typing test simulator, or practise number-heavy text on the data entry typing test.
For a Hindi exam, switch the language to Hindi and choose Inscript (Mangal) or Remington GAIL, the layout behind Kruti Dev 10. The on-screen keyboard shows every Hindi letter, so you can practise on an ordinary English keyboard.
Speed games, kids and beginners
If a timed test makes you tense, a typing speed game can build the same skill with less pressure. Typing Race puts you against three rival cars; Word Rain drops words you must clear before they land. For children, a typing speed test for kids works best with the 10 or 25 word mode and the easy-to-read font. For beginners of any age, start with plain lower-case text – a typing speed test without punctuation – and add capitals and numbers later.
