How is WPM calculated?
Typing speed uses a standard "word" of five characters, spaces and punctuation included. That way a line of short words and a line of long words count fairly. From there, the WPM calculation formula is simple:
Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Net WPM = Gross WPM − (uncorrected mistakes ÷ minutes)
Accuracy = (words − mistakes) ÷ words × 100
CPM = characters ÷ minutes · KPH = characters × 60 ÷ minutes
Gross WPM is pure speed. Net WPM takes a penalty for each mistake you did not fix – the version most employers and exams care about. CPM is the same speed counted in characters, and KPH (keystrokes per hour, also called KDPH, key depressions per hour) is the unit used for data entry and many Indian government skill tests.
Worked example
You typed 2,000 characters in 10 minutes and left 12 mistakes.
- Words = 2,000 ÷ 5 = 400.
- Gross WPM = 400 ÷ 10 = 40.
- Net WPM = 40 − (12 ÷ 10) = 38.8.
- Accuracy = (400 − 12) ÷ 400 × 100 = 97%.
- CPM = 2,000 ÷ 10 = 200, and KPH = 2,000 × 60 ÷ 10 = 12,000.

How to calculate WPM in a typing test by hand
- Count characters, including spaces. In Microsoft Word, select the text and open Review → Word Count; use "Characters (with spaces)".
- Convert the time to minutes. To calculate words per minute with seconds, divide the seconds by 60: 2 minutes 30 seconds = 2.5 minutes. The calculator's separate minutes and seconds boxes do this for you.
- Divide characters by 5, then by minutes, for gross WPM.
- Subtract mistakes per minute for net WPM.
If you only know the word count – for example from Word's "Words" figure – switch the calculator to Words. It multiplies by five for you so CPM and KPH still work. Real words average a little over five characters in English, so a word count gives a slightly lower speed than a character count.
The typing tests on this site score you a slightly different way: net WPM there counts only correctly typed characters, (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes, and accuracy uses keystrokes. Is my WPM fast? A quick guide
The average adult types about 40 WPM. Here is how common scores compare – typical ranges, not strict rules:

So what is a fast WPM rate? For typing, 60–70+ WPM. What is an acceptable WPM rate for a job? Many office roles ask for 35–45 WPM with 95%+ accuracy. To go from 40 to 70 WPM, the usual answer is touch typing plus short daily practice; the typing practice page drills the keys you miss most.
What is the average WPM?
Average WPM depends on age, practice and keyboard. As rough guides: adults average about 40 WPM on a keyboard; typing speed by age rises through school, and the average WPM for kids is often 10–25 WPM at primary level, reaching adult speeds in the late teens with regular practice. How to calculate WPM for reading and reading fluency
Switch to Words, enter the number of words read aloud or silently, and the time. Gross WPM is then your reading speed. Silent reading for adults is typically about 200–260 WPM, which is why 300 WPM is fast for reading but impossible for typing.
For reading fluency checks in schools, teachers use words correct per minute (WCPM): (words read − errors) ÷ minutes. Enter the words read, the time and the reading errors as "mistakes", and the calculator's net WPM is exactly that WCPM figure.
How to calculate WPM for speaking and writing
For a speech, count the words in your script and time yourself reading it aloud, then enter both in Words mode. Average conversational speaking is about 120–160 WPM; many presenters aim for roughly 130–150 so listeners can follow. For handwriting, time yourself copying a passage – most adults write by hand at roughly 15–25 WPM, far slower than typing.
WPM and KPH for government typing exams
Indian exams often state speed in key depressions per hour. Use the KPH figure, or convert: KPH = WPM × 5 × 60.
