Typing practice that aims at your weakest keys

Start typing in the box above. The practice text is built from the keys you miss or type slowly, and it changes as those keys improve.

Loading typing practice…

Typing practice works best when it is aimed. Typing random words for an hour mostly repeats what you already do well. This page does the opposite: it looks at your saved key statistics, finds the four letters that cost you the most time or errors, and fills a 1-minute round with real words that contain them.

What is typing practice, and how is it different from a test?

A test asks "how fast are you today?". Practice asks "what should get better next?". Both use the same scoring, but practice text is chosen for learning, not for fairness. Here that means more words with the keys you find hard, and fewer with keys you already type smoothly.

Every time you finish a lesson, test or practice round on this site, the time and accuracy for each key is saved in your browser. A key needs at least five presses before it is judged. The score for each key combines how often you miss it (weighted most) and how long you take to press it. The four keys with the worst scores become the focus of your next round.

If you arrive from a test result by pressing "Practise weak keys", the page uses exactly the keys from that result instead of your long-term history.

How to practice typing properly

  • Use the right finger every time. Typing practice with finger position matters more than speed. The on-screen keyboard colours each key by finger, and the animated hands show the movement.
  • Accuracy first. Aim for 95% or more. If you drop below that, slow down for the next round.
  • Short rounds, several times. Three to five rounds of 1 minute, with a short break between them, beat one tired 20-minute session.
  • Finish the word, then fix it. Backspace is allowed, but correcting inside a word breaks your rhythm. Finish, then fix.
  • Stop when you get sloppy. Tired practice builds tired habits.

How often should I practise typing? Every day if you can. Practising for 15 minutes daily is enough for steady progress; five days a week works too.

Practice plans for 5, 10, 15 and 30 minutes

Time you haveWhat to do
5 minutesThree 1-minute weak-key rounds here, then one 1-minute test to see the result.
10 minutesOne lesson you want more stars on, three weak-key rounds, one paragraph.
15 minutesWarm up with a 1-minute test, five weak-key rounds, then one typing game for rhythm.
30 minutesTwo lessons, five weak-key rounds, one 5-minute test, and a longer paragraph or exam passage.

The time and word buttons above the typing box let you change the round from 15 seconds to 10 minutes, or to a fixed number of words, if you want longer practice.

Typing practice for beginners with fingers

If you are at zero level, weak-key drills are not the place to start, because you do not know all the keys yet. Begin with the typing lessons, which teach the keyboard row by row: the "J F and space" drill first, then the rest of the home row, then the upper row and the bottom row. Come back here once you have finished the home row and top row. By then the site knows enough about your keys to build useful drills.

How do beginners practise typing without looking? Keep your index fingers on the F and J bumps, look only at the screen, and use the on-screen keyboard when you forget where a key is.

How to practise typing speed once you know the keys

Speed comes from smooth common words and an even rhythm. After your weak-key rounds, try these:

  • Full sentences. The paragraph typing test gives you real passages of about 80 words, with capitals and punctuation, like typing practice with full sentences at work.
  • Games. Typing practice with a game, such as the falling words in Word Rain, trains you to read ahead and react quickly.
  • Timed tests. A weekly 1-minute and 5-minute test shows whether your practice is working.

What is a realistic target? Most people who practise daily move from about 30 WPM to about 40 WPM in four to eight weeks. The step from 40 to 60 takes longer and depends on regular use.

How your practice rounds are scored

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

Example: in a 1-minute round you press 190 keys and 176 are correct. Speed is 176 ÷ 5 = 35.2, shown as 35 WPM. Accuracy is 176 ÷ 190 = about 92.6%, so the next round should be a little slower and cleaner. The result screen also shows raw speed (all keys typed), characters per minute, consistency, and the words you mistyped.

Hindi typing practice in Mangal or Kruti Dev layout

Choose Hindi in the Language menu and pick the Keyboard: Inscript for Mangal-style Unicode typing, or Remington GAIL for the Kruti Dev typewriter layout. The practice then works the same way, with weak-key drills built from Devanagari letters and matras. You do not need a Hindi keyboard installed, because the site maps your English keys to Hindi. If you are still learning where the letters are, start with the Hindi typing lessons.

Hindi typing practice kaise kare for exams? Do the weak-key rounds daily for accuracy, then type full Hindi passages in the exam simulator for your exam: CPCT, SSC or court tests.

Typing practice for SSC CGL, CHSL and CPCT exams

Government typing tests are long, often 10 or 15 minutes, and many count every error as lost words. Short weak-key rounds help most in the early weeks, when accuracy is the problem. In the last month before the exam, spend most of your time on full-length passages with the exam's rules. As per recent notifications, SSC CHSL asks for 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi, and SSC CGL DEST uses 8,000 key depressions per hour; always check the official notice for your exam.

Typing practice on laptop and mobile

Laptop keyboards work well for practice, but flat keys make it easy to lose the home row, so feel for the F and J bumps often. On a phone, the page works with the phone's own keyboard for thumb typing, but finger-by-finger practice needs a real keyboard; a Bluetooth keyboard with a tablet or phone works fine.

Your results feed your streak, XP and badges, which you can see on the My progress page. When your speed is where you want it, take a test and print a free certificate from your own result.

Typing Practice: frequently asked questions

How does this typing practice choose my weak keys?
It uses the per-key statistics saved in your browser from lessons, tests and practice. Keys with at least five presses get a score from their error rate and average time, and the four worst become the focus of the round.
What if I have no typing history yet?
You get normal random words. After a few tests or lessons the page has enough data to build targeted drills.
How long should I practise typing each day?
15 minutes a day is a good target. Even 5 minutes of focused weak-key rounds, done daily, beats a long session once a week.
Is this typing practice free and without sign-up?
Yes. Everything is free and nothing needs an account. Your statistics stay in your browser; export them from My progress if you change devices.
Can I practise typing with a specific set of keys?
Yes. After any test, press "Practise weak keys" on the result screen. The practice then uses just those keys for as long as you stay on that page.
Typing practice kaise kare for 40 WPM?
Finish the lessons, then do 3–5 weak-key rounds, one paragraph and one test every day. Most learners who start near 30 WPM reach 40 WPM in about one to two months.
Can I get a certificate from typing practice?
Certificates are made from test results. Take a 1-minute or longer test, then open the certificate from the result screen; it is free and shows your real WPM and accuracy.
