Loading hindi typing test…

This Hindi typing test lets you type real Devanagari text on an ordinary English (QWERTY) keyboard. The site maps each key to a Hindi letter in your browser, so you can practise the two layouts that government typing exams accept – Inscript, used with the Mangal font, and Remington GAIL, which follows the old Kruti Dev typewriter keys – without installing a single font or driver. It is free, needs no sign-up, and saves your results in your own browser.

हिंदी टाइपिंग टेस्ट कैसे दें – how to take the Hindi typing test

If you are wondering "hindi typing test kaise kare", the process takes less than a minute to learn:

  1. Choose the layout your exam uses. Inscript for Mangal/Unicode, or Remington GAIL if you learned on a Kruti Dev typewriter chart. Not sure? Read the comparison below.
  2. Choose a length. The page opens with a Hindi paragraph. You can also run a 1-minute warm-up, a 5-minute test or a 10-minute test, which matches the SSC and railway skill tests.
  3. Type what you see. Letters you type correctly turn solid; mistakes are marked so you can see them without stopping. Turn on stop-on-error if you want to fix every slip before moving on.
  4. Check the result screen. It lists your Hindi typing speed in WPM, accuracy, the matras and letters you mistyped most, and a button to practise exactly those keys.

Press Tab for a fresh passage and Esc to restart the same one. Sound, theme and font size are in the settings; the easy-to-read font helps if Devanagari looks small on your screen.

Inscript (Mangal) or Remington GAIL (Kruti Dev): which Hindi keyboard?

Both layouts type the same Hindi, but the keys sit in different places, so pick one and stay with it. Here is how they differ on this site:

Hindi typing test with an English keyboard

You do not need a special Hindi keyboard or stickers. Keep your normal laptop or desktop keyboard: the on-screen keyboard shows the Hindi character on every key and lights up the next key to press, like a live Hindi typing chart. After a week you will stop looking at it. If you already have a Hindi input method set up on your computer, the test accepts that too – just turn the virtual layout off.

How your Hindi typing speed (WPM) is measured

The result uses the standard definition of a word: five characters, spaces included. That keeps Hindi and English scores comparable.

Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

Worked example. In a 5-minute Hindi typing test you type 760 characters, of which 700 are correct. Net speed = 700 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 28 WPM. Raw speed, which counts everything you typed, is 760 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 30.4 WPM. If you pressed 800 keys and 752 were right the first time, accuracy is 752 ÷ 800 = 94%. Your CPM (correct characters per minute) is 700 ÷ 5 = 140.

Exam software counts key depressions rather than characters. In Hindi a conjunct such as क्ष or a letter like भ in Remington can take two or more keystrokes, so exam scores can differ a little from this test. The government exam typing test scores you the exam way, with key depressions and full and half mistakes.

Hindi typing speed needed for government jobs

Most Hindi typing tests for government exams ask for 20–30 words per minute with few errors. These are the figures quoted in recent notifications; always confirm with the official notice for your exam year.

ExamHindi speedTimeHindi layout
SSC CHSL (LDC/JSA)30 WPM (9,000 key depressions per hour)10 minKruti Dev/Remington or Mangal/Inscript
RRB NTPC (graduate typist posts)25 WPM10 minAs allowed in the notice
MP CPCT20 NWPM to qualify (some posts ask more)15 minRemington GAIL or Inscript (Unicode)
UPSSSC Junior AssistantAbout 25 WPMCheck noticeCheck notice
High courts and district courtsOften 25–30 WPMUsually 10 minVaries by court

As a rough guide, a beginner types Hindi at about 8–15 WPM, a regular practiser reaches 20–25 WPM in a few weeks, and exam toppers sit at 35 WPM or more with 97%+ accuracy.

How to learn Hindi typing fast at home (hindi typing kaise sikhe)

Learning Hindi typing is not tough, but it rewards patience: speed comes from accuracy, not the other way round. A simple plan for practising Hindi typing on a laptop or computer:

  1. Days 1–7: learn the keys. Work through the free Hindi typing lessons, which start on the home row and add one row at a time. Aim for 95% accuracy before speed.
  2. Days 8–15: words and matras. Type short tests with common words. Watch the matras (ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ) and anusvara (ं), where most beginners lose marks.
  3. Days 16–30: paragraphs. One 10-minute Hindi paragraph a day at exam pace, then one quick drill on the keys the result screen flags.
  4. After a month: exam mode. Switch to the exam simulator with backspace off, so the pressure feels familiar on the day.

Hindi typing words for beginners

Start with words made only from home-row keys. On Inscript try कर, पर, तक, रोक and पेट. On Remington GAIL try सरकार (L J D K J), सही, कहा and यह. Typing real words from day one builds the rhythm you need for paragraphs later.

Common Hindi typing mistakes and how to fix them

  • ि in the wrong order. Inscript types it after the consonant, Remington before. Mixing layouts is the number-one cause of errors, so practise only one.
  • Missing anusvara or chandrabindu. हिंदी without ं is a full mistake in most exams. Slow down on nasal sounds.
  • Wrong half letters. स्त, क्ष, त्र and श्र each have a set sequence. Drill them separately in custom text.
  • Looking at the keyboard. Keep your eyes on the passage and use the on-screen keyboard only when stuck.
  • Chasing speed too early. Below 95% accuracy, slow down. In exams, every wrong word costs more than a slow one.

Hindi typing on laptop, MS Word, phone and WhatsApp

The test works in any modern browser on a laptop, PC or tablet with no download. For typing Hindi outside this site, such as in MS Word or Excel, Windows includes a Hindi keyboard (Hindi Traditional is Inscript) under language settings, and Mangal is already installed as a Unicode font. On a phone, a touch keyboard with Hindi support is the easiest way to type Hindi in WhatsApp, but for an exam you need a physical keyboard, so do your timed practice on a computer.

Hindi Typing Test: frequently asked questions

Can I take a Hindi typing test with an English keyboard?
Yes. Choose Inscript or Remington GAIL in the settings and the site turns your normal English keyboard into a Hindi keyboard. The on-screen keyboard shows which Hindi letter each key types.
Which is better for exams, Mangal (Inscript) or Kruti Dev (Remington)?
Both are accepted by most government exams, including SSC and CPCT. Inscript is easier to learn from scratch because vowels and consonants are split between the hands. Remington GAIL suits people who already know the Kruti Dev typewriter layout. Pick the one your exam allows and stick with it.
Is this Hindi typing practice free, and do I get a certificate?
Everything is free with no sign-up. After a test you can create a free typing certificate from your own result as a PNG or PDF. It shows your practice score; it is not an official government certificate.
What is a good Hindi typing speed?
About 25–30 WPM with 95% accuracy or better is enough for most government jobs. SSC CHSL asks for 30 WPM in Hindi and CPCT asks for 20 NWPM to qualify, as per recent notifications.
Can I practise without a time limit?
Yes. The paragraph mode ends when you finish the passage, so you can type at your own pace. Timed options from 15 seconds to 10 minutes are there when you want exam-style pressure.
Why does my Hindi speed look lower than my English speed?
Hindi needs more keystrokes per word because of matras, half letters and conjuncts. A Hindi speed about 5–10 WPM below your English speed is normal, and the required speeds for Hindi in exams are lower for the same reason.
Where are my results saved?
In your browser on this device. Open My progress to see your history, streak and weak keys, or export them to move to another device.
