This Portuguese typing test uses real Portuguese words and short everyday texts, so you practise the accents and the ç you will actually type – não, você, também, já, começar. In Brazil and Portugal it is called a teste de digitação, and speed is measured in palavras por minuto (PPM). The test is free, needs no registration and runs in any browser.
What makes typing Portuguese different
Portuguese uses more accent types than most European languages: the acute (á é í ó ú), the circumflex (â ê ô), the tilde (ã õ), the grave on the crase (à) and the cedilla (ç). They are everywhere – não, ação, informações, está – so a Portuguese text has far more accented letters per line than Spanish or Italian.
Almost every accented letter is two keystrokes: first a dead accent key, then the vowel. The -ção and -ções endings alone need a ç key and a tilde in the same syllable. That is why beginners often find Portuguese slower than English at first, and why drilling those endings pays off quickly.
How to type Portuguese on an English keyboard
You can take this teste de digitação online in two ways:
- Your own keyboard. If your computer uses ABNT2 (Brazil), the Portugal layout or US-International, keep the default option. Whatever your system types goes into the test.
- The built-in ABNT2 layout. Choose "Portuguese (Brazil ABNT2)" in the Keyboard menu and your English keyboard types Portuguese: ; becomes ç, ' becomes the ~ accent key and [ becomes the ´ accent key. The on-screen keyboard shows the ABNT2 keycaps, coloured by finger, and the animated hands point to the next key.
Portugal uses a different keyboard from Brazil. Both put ç right of L, but the accent keys sit elsewhere, so if you learnt on a Portuguese (Portugal) keyboard, keep your own. On a phone (teste de digitação no celular) the built-in layout is switched off: type with your phone keyboard and hold a letter to choose ã, é, ç and the rest.

A dead key shows nothing until you press the next letter. Press the accent, release it, then press the vowel.
Teste de digitação sem acento
Lots of people look for a typing test in Portuguese sem acento because their keyboard lacks accent keys. The standard test keeps correct spelling – a missing til turns não into a different word. Once your fingers know the layout, switch back to the accented test – that is what a job or course will ask for.
Palavras por minuto: how your speed is worked out
Every 5 characters, spaces included, count as one word, so long Portuguese words are not penalised.
WPM (palavras por minuto) = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Raw WPM = (all typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Worked example: in a 1 minute teste de digitação com tempo you type 200 characters and 190 are correct. Your speed is 190 ÷ 5 = 38 WPM, your raw speed is 200 ÷ 5 = 40 WPM, and with 190 good keystrokes out of 200 your accuracy is 95%. Your CPM is 190. Note that each ã or é took two key presses, so your actual keystroke count was a little higher than 200.
Portuguese typing speed test: what is a good score?
There is no public typing test ranking on this site – your results stay private in your browser – but you can compare yourself with these typical ranges:

- Drill the endings. Type ação, ações, informação, não, então until tilde-then-vowel is automatic.
- Keep the rhythm steady. Pausing before every accent hurts more than typing a little slower all the way through.
