Remington GAIL is the Hindi keyboard for people who learned on a typewriter or on Kruti Dev: the keys are where your fingers expect them, but the text comes out as modern Unicode. This Remington GAIL typing test lets you practise that layout free in your browser, with a colour-coded on-screen keyboard, animated hands and exam-style timing.
What is Remington GAIL?
For decades, Hindi typists in India learned on Remington typewriters, and the Kruti Dev font copied that key arrangement onto computers. Kruti Dev, however, is not Unicode, so its text breaks outside that one font. Remington GAIL solves the problem: it is a Unicode keyboard layout that reproduces the Remington (Kruti Dev) key positions, so you type exactly as before and get standard Unicode Hindi that displays in Mangal or any other Devanagari font.

How this site lets you practise on any English keyboard
Normally you would install a Remington GAIL keyboard driver on Windows before typing a single letter. Here the layout is built into the page: each physical key on your English keyboard types the Remington GAIL character shown on the on-screen keyboard. It works the same on a laptop, a desktop or a tablet with a keyboard, with no download and no admin rights – handy on a shared or office PC.
The page also handles the three typewriter habits that confuse most online tools:
- ि typed before the consonant. You press F (ि) and then the letter, as on a typewriter. The site places the matra after the consonant in the stored Unicode text, so विकास typed as F O D K L is marked correct.
- Reph typed after the syllable. Shift+Z adds र् to the letter you just typed, so धर्म is / K E Shift+Z.
- Half letter + ा = full letter. ध्, ख्, श्, ण्, भ् and others become full letters when you add ा (K), exactly as in Kruti Dev.

The top row (Q to P) types ु ू म त ज ल न प व च, and with Shift gives फ and the half letters म् त् ज् ल् न् प् व् च्. The bottom row (Z to /) types ्र ग ब अ इ द उ ए ण् ध्, and with Shift gives र् ग् ब् ट ठ छ ड ढ झ घ्. The on-screen keyboard shows all of it while you type, so you never need a printed Remington GAIL typing chart or PDF.

Remington GAIL for CPCT and other exams
Computer-based exams need Unicode, which is why Remington GAIL is the standard choice for typewriter-trained candidates. As per recent notifications – always confirm with the official notice for your exam year:
- MP CPCT: the Hindi typing section is 15 minutes and you may choose Remington GAIL or Inscript. About 20 net words per minute is the common qualifying figure; some posts ask for more. Practise the full format on the CPCT typing test.
- SSC CHSL and similar exams: Hindi is offered in Remington-style (Kruti Dev) or Inscript (Mangal). Your Remington GAIL practice covers the Remington option.
- High courts and state recruitment: many now use Unicode software; check whether your notice says Remington GAIL, Kruti Dev or Mangal.
How your Remington GAIL typing speed is measured
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Worked example (CPCT length). In a 15-minute Remington GAIL typing test you type 1,780 characters, 1,650 of them correct. Net speed = 1,650 ÷ 5 ÷ 15 = 22 WPM, just above the 20 NWPM qualifying mark. Raw speed = 1,780 ÷ 5 ÷ 15 ≈ 23.7 WPM. Your CPM (correct characters per minute) is 1,650 ÷ 15 = 110.

Think of the lessons as a free Remington GAIL typing tutor: each one starts at lesson 1 of its row and unlocks the next when you hit the target. If you already type Kruti Dev, you can skip to day 11: the fingers are the same, you are only getting used to Unicode output.
How to set the Remington GAIL keyboard on Windows 10 or 11
To type Remington GAIL in MS Word or other programs on Windows 10 or 11, you need a Hindi input tool that offers the Remington (GAIL) typewriter layout, then you switch to it from the language bar. Exam centres already have it installed, usually paired with the Mangal font, so Remington GAIL Mangal typing is exactly what you practise here. For practice, this page is enough: nothing to set up, and it runs in any modern browser. Remington Hindi typing practice on an Android phone needs a physical keyboard; on-screen phone keyboards do not follow the typewriter layout.
