This English typing test uses full paragraphs rather than lists of easy words, so the WPM you get is the speed you would really reach typing an email, a report or an exam passage. It is free, runs in any browser on a laptop or desktop, and gives you a detailed result the moment you finish.
How to take the English typing test (english typing test kaise kare)
- Sit comfortably with the screen at eye level and your wrists relaxed.
- Put your fingers on the home row – asdf jkl; – with your thumbs over the space bar.
- Start typing the English paragraph. The clock starts with your first key.
- Do not stop for every mistake. Fix it if you notice it at once, otherwise keep going.
- Check your result, then press Tab for another paragraph or Esc to retry the same one.
The on-screen keyboard is coloured by finger and the animated hands show which finger to use for the next key, which is handy if you are still learning to type with all ten fingers. You can hide it once you no longer need it.
Choose your English typing test: 1 minute to 10 minutes
The page opens in paragraph mode, which ends when you finish the passage – a good way to type without a time limit. For timed practice, change the length in the settings:
| Length | Best for |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | A quick speed check or warm-up |
| 2–3 minutes | Daily practice without getting tired |
| 5 minutes | A fair measure of your real speed; common in job tests |
| 10 minutes | Exam practice – SSC and railway tests last 10 minutes |
| Words (10–100) | Short bursts to beat a personal best |
You can also add punctuation and numbers to word tests, type famous quotes, or paste your own English text into the custom typing test. For longer passages only, try the paragraph typing test.
How your English typing speed is calculated
Every test here uses the standard definition of a word: 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Raw WPM = (all typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Worked example. In a 5-minute English typing test you type 1,200 characters and 1,150 are correct. Net speed = 1,150 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 46 WPM. Raw speed = 1,200 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 48 WPM. If 1,180 of your 1,230 keystrokes were right first time, accuracy = 1,180 ÷ 1,230 ≈ 95.9%. Your CPM is 1,150 ÷ 5 = 230 correct characters per minute.
The result also shows consistency (how even your speed was), a speed chart across the test, the words you mistyped, and the keys to practise, with a one-click drill for them.
What is a good English typing speed?
| Speed | Level |
|---|---|
| Under 25 WPM | Beginner – still looking at the keys |
| 30–40 WPM | Average; most adults type around 40 WPM |
| 50–60 WPM | Good – comfortable for office and professional work |
| 70–90 WPM | Fast |
| 100+ WPM | Elite – a small share of typists |
These are typical figures, not strict rules. Whatever your speed, aim for 95% accuracy or better; below that, slowing down usually raises your net WPM.
English typing test for government exams
Most Indian government typing tests are in English or Hindi, with English speeds set a little higher. As per recent notifications (always confirm with the official notice for your exam year):
- SSC CHSL: 35 WPM in 10 minutes, usually without backspace.
- SSC CGL DEST and DEO: 8,000 key depressions per hour in 15 minutes (about 27 WPM).
- RRB NTPC: 30 WPM in 10 minutes, backspace off.
- MP CPCT: 30 net WPM in a 15-minute English test.
- High courts: typically 30–40 WPM.
Normal practice here lets you use backspace. When you are ready for an English typing test without backspace and with exam scoring, use the government exam typing test, which applies each exam's rules and gives a pass or fail.
English typing practice for beginners
If you type with two fingers, start with lessons rather than tests. The free typing lessons teach touch typing from A to Z: home row first (asdf jkl;), then the top row, bottom row, capitals, numbers and symbols, each with a star rating so you know when to move on. Twenty minutes a day for three or four weeks is enough for most beginners to type without looking.
A classic warm-up is the sentence The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog, which uses every letter of the alphabet. Type it five times slowly, then five times at speed, before your daily English typing practice.
English typing games and tests for kids
Tests are not the only way to practise. The typing games – falling words, a space shooter, a car race, balloon popping and zombies – all use real English words, get faster as you improve and keep high scores in your browser. They are a good way to add a second daily session without it feeling like work. For children, the English typing test for kids uses shorter, easier words, and the balloon game colours each balloon by the finger that should press the letter.
How to improve your English typing speed
- Accuracy first. Speed follows accuracy. Stay above 95% before pushing faster.
- Use every finger. Follow the colour guide on the on-screen keyboard until each key has its own finger.
- Practise common words. The most common English words (the, and, of, to, that) make up a big share of any text; type them without thinking.
- Train the tricky parts. Capitals, commas, apostrophes and numbers slow most people down. Turn on punctuation and numbers.
- Work on weak keys. Use the practice button on the result screen to drill the keys you miss most.
- Short, daily sessions. Fifteen minutes every day beats two hours once a week.
When you hit a speed you are proud of, create a free typing certificate from your result. It shows your WPM and accuracy from this site; it is a practice certificate, not an official qualification.
