Preeti, Nepali Unicode Romanized or Inscript?
Most Nepali typists learned on one of these, and it decides how you should take the test:

If you learned Preeti, the easiest way to take a Nepali typing test in Unicode is to install Nepali Unicode Traditional, which keeps your Preeti finger memory, and select "My own Nepali keyboard". If you type phonetically, install Nepali Unicode Romanized. The built-in Inscript layout is for anyone who wants to type Nepali with no setup at all.
The Nepali Inscript keyboard: home row and key tips
Nepali and Hindi share the Devanagari script, so Nepali typing on Inscript uses exactly the same keys as Hindi. Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L ;:

Keys that matter most for Nepali text:
- Halant ् (D) builds half letters: म ् र = म्र, as in हाम्रो. Nepali uses it often, including at word ends where the passage shows it.
- Chandrabindu ँ (Shift+X) is common in Nepali verb forms such as बस्छौँ and गर्छौँ. Plain X is the anusvara ं.
- ङ (Shift+U) and ञ (Shift+]) appear far more in Nepali than in Hindi.
- Danda । (Shift+.) ends a sentence in Nepali, so you will press it often.
- Shortcut clusters with Shift: 4 र् (reph, as in गर्नु), 3 ्र, 5 ज्ञ, 6 त्र, 7 क्ष, 8 श्र.
- Type the vowel sign after the consonant, even ि, which is drawn on the left: क + ि = कि.

Nepali typing speed formula and results
The test uses the standard typing formula, so your Nepali score compares fairly with English:
Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Each Unicode character counts, including matras, the halant and the chandrabindu, plus the space after a correct word. हाम्रो is six characters (ह ा म ् र ो). Raw WPM counts everything typed, CPM is characters per minute, and consistency shows how steady your pace was.
Worked example: in a 5 minute Nepali typing test you type 600 correct characters and 640 in total. Net speed = (600 ÷ 5) ÷ 5 = 24 WPM. Accuracy = 600 ÷ 640 × 100 = 93.75%.

English speeds are usually higher (about 40 WPM is average for adults) because Nepali words need more keystrokes. Aim for 95% accuracy before you push speed.
Nepali typing skill tests for jobs
Computer operator, office assistant and similar posts in Nepal, including many under the Public Service Commission (Lok Sewa Aayog), commonly include a practical Nepali and English typing skill test. Older exams were typed in Preeti; newer ones increasingly use Unicode. The required speed, time limit and font depend on the post.
The format of Nepali typing tests in these exams is usually a printed or on-screen paragraph copied under a fixed time limit, scored on speed and mistakes.
Always check the official syllabus or notice for your exam: speed, duration, font (Preeti or Unicode) and keyboard layout can all differ.

An easy way to learn Nepali typing
You can learn Nepali typing on any laptop or computer with just this page and about 15 minutes a day. There are several types of typing test to mix in: timed tests from 15 seconds to 10 minutes, word-count tests and full paragraphs.
- Pick one layout and stay with it. Switching between Preeti, Romanized and Inscript slows everyone down.
- Home row first, without looking at the keys, until you can type the first lesson at 95% accuracy.
- A 1 minute test every day to track progress on My progress.
- Practise weak keys: the result screen's "Practise weak keys" button opens typing practice with Nepali words built from your mistakes.
- A Nepali typing test of 5 minutes or 10 minutes two or three times a week to build stamina.
For something lighter, the typing games (falling words, space shooter, racing) all work with Nepali words.
How can I type Nepali on an English keyboard?
In this test: keep Inscript selected and press the English keys; Nepali letters appear, and the on-screen keyboard shows where each one is. No stickers needed.
On a Windows computer or laptop: install the free Nepali Unicode Romanized or Traditional keyboard, or add Nepali in Settings → Time & language → Language & region. Switch languages with Windows+Space. Then set a Unicode font such as Kalimati or Mangal in Word.
Phonetic typing: Google Input Tools and phone keyboards turn English letters into Nepali (nepali → नेपाली). Typing Nepali to English the other way round, or translating, is a separate task that a typing test doesn't measure.
On a phone: add Nepali in Gboard or your phone's keyboard; the test uses your own keyboard automatically on touch screens.
