This Gujarati typing test gives you a real Gujarati passage in Unicode, the text you see in the Shruti font on Windows, and measures how fast and accurately you type it. In Gujarati it is a ગુજરાતી ટાઇપિંગ ટેસ્ટ. The test is free, needs no sign-up, and works in any browser on a PC, laptop or phone.
Shruti font, Terafont and Inscript: what this test uses
Gujarati typing has two worlds. Unicode fonts such as Shruti (built into Windows), Lohit Gujarati and Noto Sans Gujarati store real Gujarati characters, so text looks the same everywhere. Older legacy fonts such as Terafont and LMG Arun map Gujarati shapes onto English letters and only look right when that exact font is installed.
This site offers built-in Inscript (Unicode), the standard keyboard that Windows uses with the Shruti font, plus your own keyboard. So a Shruti-font Gujarati typing test here is exactly what you get by default. If you use Microsoft Indic Input 3, the Windows Gujarati keyboard or Google Input Tools for Gujarati typing, choose "My own Gujarati keyboard" in the Keyboard menu and type as usual. Legacy font layouts (Terafont style) write non-Unicode letters and won't match the passage.
The Gujarati Inscript keyboard
Inscript uses the same key positions for every Indian script, so if you know Hindi Inscript you already know Gujarati. Rest your fingers on the home row, A S D F and J K L ;:
| Key | A | S | D | F | G | H | J | K | L | ; | ' |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | ો | ે | ્ | િ | ુ | પ | ર | ક | ત | ચ | ટ |
| Shift | ઓ | એ | અ | ઇ | ઉ | ફ | – | ખ | થ | છ | ઠ |
Left hand: vowel signs (માત્રા). Right hand: consonants. Shift gives full vowels and aspirated consonants (ક → ખ, ત → થ, ચ → છ). The rest of the Gujarati typing keyboard follows the same logic:
- Top row: Q ૌ, W ૈ, E ા, R ી, T ૂ, Y બ, U હ, I ગ, O દ, P જ, [ ડ. With Shift: ઔ ઐ આ ઈ ઊ ભ ઙ ઘ ધ ઝ ઢ.
- Bottom row: X ં (anusvara), C મ, V ન, B વ, N લ, M સ, / ય. With Shift: Shift+X ઁ, Shift+C ણ, Shift+N ળ, Shift+M શ, Shift+comma ષ.
- Number row with Shift: 3 ્ર, 4 ર્ (reph), 5 જ્ઞ, 6 ત્ર, 7 ક્ષ, 8 શ્ર. These cover words like જ્ઞાન, શ્રી, પ્રમાણ and ક્ષમા in one key press.
- English loanwords: ૉ on the backslash key and ઑ with Shift (ઑફિસ, કૉલેજ); ઍ and ૅ on Shift+1 and Shift+2.
Gujarati typing tips for matras and joint letters
- Gujarati has no top line (shirorekha), so small matras like િ and ી are easy to misread. Try the easy-to-read font in Settings if they blur together.
- Type the consonant first, then the matra, even for િ, which is drawn on the left: ક + િ = કિ.
- Joint letters use the halant on D: સ ્ ત = સ્ત, ન ્ ય = ન્ય.
- ળ (Shift+N) is common in Gujarati (બાળક, સરળ), so learn it with લ.

How your Gujarati typing speed is measured
Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Every Unicode character counts, matras and the halant included, plus the space after each correct word. ગુજરાતી is seven characters (ગ ુ જ ર ા ત ી). Raw WPM counts everything typed; CPM is characters per minute.
Worked example: in a 3 minute Gujarati typing test you type 420 correct characters and 450 in total. Net speed = (420 ÷ 5) ÷ 3 = 28 WPM. Accuracy = 420 ÷ 450 × 100 = about 93.3%, a sign to slow down a little and aim for 95%.
| Level | Gujarati (WPM) |
|---|---|
| Beginner | about 5–15 |
| Office and clerk work | about 20–30 |
| Good | about 30–40 |
| Fast | 40+ |
Is typing 40 WPM hard? In English, 40 WPM is roughly the adult average and very reachable. In Gujarati it takes more practice, because each word needs more keystrokes for matras and joint letters, but most learners who practise daily get there in a few months.
Gujarati typing for CCC, GSSSB and other government tests
In Gujarat, Gujarati typing shows up in several places:
- CCC (Course on Computer Concepts) exams taken by many Gujarat government employees and candidates include practical computer work, and Gujarati typing in Unicode is a common part of the practice.
- Clerk, typist and assistant posts recruited through bodies such as GSSSB, GPSC and the courts may include a skill test in Gujarati and English typing on a computer.
Required speed, test time, font (usually Unicode/Shruti for newer tests) and Backspace rules differ between exams. Always check the official notification before you practise to a target.
How long is a typing test in these exams? Often 5 to 10 minutes. Use Paragraph mode with the 10 minute timer to copy that, and try the government exam typing test for strict exam-style scoring. If your test is in English as well, add the English typing test to each session.
How to learn Gujarati typing
- Home row first: ો ે ્ િ ુ and પ ર ક ત ચ ટ. Don't move on until you can type them without looking.
- A 1 minute test every day to track speed and spot slow keys.
- Weak-key practice: click "Practise weak keys" on the result screen to open typing practice with Gujarati words that use your slowest letters.
- A Gujarati typing test paragraph of 5 or 10 minutes two or three times a week for stamina.
- Games for fun: the typing games work in Gujarati too.

How to type Gujarati in Word, Excel, WhatsApp or on a phone
- On this page: no setup. Keep Inscript and type with your English keys.
- Gujarati typing for PC and laptop (Windows 10 and 11): add Gujarati in Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then choose the Gujarati Inscript or phonetic keyboard. Switch with Windows+Space. Your Gujarati typing then works in MS Word, Excel and WhatsApp Desktop, and Word shows it in the Shruti font.
- Gujarati typing in English words: Google Input Tools and phonetic keyboards turn
gujaratiinto ગુજરાતી. Easy to start, but slower than Inscript for long texts. - Mobile and iPhone: add Gujarati in Gboard or in iPhone Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. The test uses your phone keyboard automatically. Gujarati typing by voice works in Gboard for messages, but a typing test only measures what you type.
Gujarati numbers: for Gujarati typing with numbers, the numbers toggle mixes in 0–9 digits. Gujarati digits (૦ ૧ ૨ ૩) need your own Gujarati keyboard.
