Loading kruti dev typing test…

Kruti Dev is the Hindi font most typing institutes still teach, and many government exams – SSC, UPSSSC, Rajasthan and several high courts – still name it in their notices. This Krutidev typing test gives you the exact Kruti Dev 010 key positions (the Remington typewriter layout) on any English keyboard, with a finger guide and instant results, free and without installing the font.

What is Kruti Dev, and how is it different from Unicode?

Kruti Dev is a legacy, non-Unicode font. It stores ordinary English letters and draws them as Devanagari shapes. When you type भारत in Kruti Dev 010, the file actually contains the letters Hkkjr; only the Kruti Dev font makes them look like Hindi. Open that text in another font, paste it into WhatsApp, or search it on Google, and you see Hkkjr again. That is why offices are moving to Unicode fonts such as Mangal, and why Kruti Dev to Unicode converters exist.

The keyboard behind Kruti Dev is the Remington typewriter layout, and that is the part your fingers need to learn. This site gives you those same key positions but outputs proper Unicode Hindi, so the passage displays correctly on any device. Remington GAIL, the Unicode keyboard used in CPCT and other computer-based exams, uses the same positions too. Learn the keys once and you can type Kruti Dev on an old office PC or Remington GAIL in a Unicode exam.

Kruti Dev comes in many numbered versions (010, 011, 055 and others) and DevLys 010 is its close cousin used in Rajasthan. They mostly share the same key mapping and differ in the look of the letters, so practising here transfers to all of them. A few rare symbols can sit on different keys, so check the chart if one does not match.

How to type in Kruti Dev: the rules that matter

The Remington layout was designed for a mechanical typewriter, so a few Hindi letters are built from pieces. Once you know these four rules, the rest is practice:

  1. ि goes first. On a typewriter the short i matra is printed before the consonant, so you press F and then the letter: कि is F D. This site stores it in correct Unicode order automatically, so you can type exactly as you learned.
  2. Half letter + ा = full letter. Many consonants live as half letters. Add the ा key (K) to complete them: ख = [ K, भ = Shift+H K, श = ' K, ण = . K.
  3. Reph (र्) comes after. The half र that sits on top of a letter is typed after its syllable with Shift+Z: कर्म = D E Shift+Z.
  4. ो and ौ are built from ा. ो = K S (ा + े) and ौ = K Shift+S. आ is अ + ा: V K.

Those "codes" are why Kruti Dev users sometimes talk about typing in English letters: the keys are the same, only the font changes what you see.

Krutidev typing test in 1, 5 or 10 minutes

The page opens with a full Hindi paragraph, but you can switch to a timed test in the settings. Each length has a job:

  • 1 minute: a warm-up to check your Krutidev typing speed before a longer session.
  • 5 minutes: the best daily Kruti Dev typing practice test – long enough to show real accuracy, short enough to repeat twice.
  • 10 minutes: the length of the SSC and railway skill tests, so it tells you whether your speed holds up under exam time.

Turn on the typewriter sound if you learned on a real Remington machine, and use the blind mode once you know the home row, so you stop checking the screen after every word.

Kruti Dev typing test for government exams

Exams that still use Kruti Dev usually give you a choice between Kruti Dev 010 (Remington) and Mangal (Inscript). As per recent notifications – always confirm with the official notice for your exam year:

  • SSC CHSL: Hindi typing at 30 WPM (9,000 key depressions per hour) in 10 minutes, in Kruti Dev 010 or Mangal.
  • Rajasthan (RSSB) LDC and similar posts: Hindi typing on DevLys 010, which uses essentially the Kruti Dev keyboard, scored on correct words.
  • UPSSSC Junior Assistant and many high courts: Hindi typing is often around 25–30 WPM; the font named in the notice varies.
  • MP CPCT: Unicode only, so choose Remington GAIL – the same keys you learn here. See the Remington GAIL typing test.

When you are ready for exam conditions, move to the SSC typing test, which switches off backspace and marks full and half mistakes the SSC way.

How your Kruti Dev typing speed is calculated

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Worked example. You take a 5-minute Kruti Dev typing test, type 640 characters and get 600 right. Net speed is 600 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 24 WPM; raw speed is 640 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 25.6 WPM. If 680 of your 720 keystrokes were right first time, accuracy is 680 ÷ 720 ≈ 94.4%.

Because Remington needs extra keystrokes for letters like भ, ख and श, the number of keys you press is higher than the number of characters on screen. Exams that count key depressions (KDPH), such as SSC, may therefore show a slightly different figure. Treat the WPM here as a close guide, and use the government exam typing test when you want a result scored the exam way.

How to learn Kruti Dev 010 typing

  1. Home row first. Learn ं े क ि ह ी र ा स य until you can type words like सरकार, सही and कहा without looking. The free Hindi typing lessons have a Remington GAIL course with the same keys.
  2. Top and bottom rows. Add म त ज ल न प व च, then ग ब अ इ द उ ए.
  3. Half letters and Shift. Drill the half-letter keys and the +ा rule until भा, खा and शा feel like one movement.
  4. Short daily tests. Two 5-minute tests and one 10-minute paragraph each day beat a single long session.
  5. Use your weak-key list. After each test, open the drill for the keys you missed most.

Most learners who already know English touch typing reach 20 WPM in Kruti Dev in 3–4 weeks of daily practice; complete beginners usually need 6–8 weeks.
