Loading telugu typing test…

This Telugu typing test gives you real Telugu words and sentences and measures how quickly and accurately you type them. In Telugu you would call it a తెలుగు టైపింగ్ టెస్ట్. It is free, runs in any browser with no sign-up, and needs no Telugu keyboard: the built-in Inscript layout lets you type Telugu script on the English keyboard you already have.

What is a typing test, and what does it consist of?

A typing test shows a passage and times you while you copy it. It consists of three things: a text, a time limit (or a fixed length), and scoring. Here you choose which of these types of typing test you want:

  • Time: 15 or 30 seconds, or 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 minutes of Telugu words.
  • Words: exactly 10, 25, 50 or 100 words, then stop.
  • Paragraph: one continuous Telugu passage, the closest to a real exam.
  • Numbers toggle: mixes numbers into the words, for a typing test including numbers such as data entry work. (A "10 key typing test" is a different thing: it measures number-pad speed. Try the 10-key typing test for that.)

Typing Telugu on the Inscript keyboard

Inscript is the Government of India standard for every Indian script, so the Telugu Inscript keyboard puts letters in the same places as Hindi, Kannada or Tamil Inscript. Put your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. This is the Telugu home row:

KeyASDFGHJKL;'
Normalి
Shift

The left hand types gunintalu (vowel signs) and the right hand types consonants. Shift gives the full vowel (అ, ఇ, ఉ) or the aspirated consonant (క → ఖ, త → థ). A few more keys worth learning early:

  • Top row: Q ౌ, W ై, E ా, R ీ, T ూ, then Y బ, U హ, I గ, O ద, P జ, [ డ.
  • Bottom row: Z ె (short e), X ం (sunna), C మ, V న, B వ, N ల, M స, / య.
  • Shift on the bottom row: Shift+C ణ, Shift+N ళ, Shift+M శ, Shift+comma ష.
  • The key left of 1 gives ొ (short o); ృ is on the = key.

Vattulu (conjuncts) and the virama

Telugu writes a consonant cluster by putting the second consonant under the first as a vattu. On Inscript you always build it the same way: consonant, the virama key ్ (D), then the next consonant. For example క ్ క gives క్క, and స ్ త gives స్త. Shortcut keys with Shift on the number row: Shift+7 క్ష, Shift+5 జ్ఞ, Shift+6 త్ర, Shift+8 శ్ర, Shift+3 ్ర (ra-vattu). Type vowel signs after the whole cluster: స్త + ా = స్తా.

Short and long e and o

Telugu has short ె and long ే, short ొ and long ో. They sit on different keys (Z and S, and the key left of 1 and A). Most early mistakes in a Telugu typing test come from pressing the long form when the text has the short one, so watch the result screen's "keys to practise" list for S and A.

For a guided course, open typing lessons and choose "Telugu – Inscript". Lessons add two keys at a time and end in real Telugu words.

Using your own Telugu keyboard, phonetic or Apple layout

Many people type Telugu in English letters (for example telugu → తెలుగు) with Google Input Tools or a phone keyboard, and DTP operators often use layouts such as Apple or RTS in software like Anu Script Manager. This site's built-in layout is Inscript (Unicode). If you learned on the Apple keyboard layout, you can still take this online Telugu typing test with it: choose "My own Telugu keyboard" in the Keyboard menu and type as usual, as long as your keyboard writes Unicode Telugu. Old non-Unicode fonts produce different characters underneath and will be marked wrong.

How the Telugu typing speed test scores you

The test uses the standard definition that one word equals five characters:

Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

Each Unicode character counts, including vowel signs and the virama, plus the space after a correct word. So తెలుగు is six characters: త ె ల ు గ ు. Raw WPM counts everything you typed; CPM is characters per minute; consistency shows how steady your speed stayed.

Worked example: in a 2 minute test you type 290 correct characters and 305 in total. Net speed = (290 ÷ 5) ÷ 2 = 29 WPM. Raw speed = (305 ÷ 5) ÷ 2 = about 30.5 WPM. Accuracy = 290 ÷ 305 × 100 = about 95.1%.

English speeds run higher (about 40 WPM is average for adults), because each Telugu word needs more keystrokes. Keep accuracy at 95% or better.

Telugu typing tests in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Typist, copyist, junior assistant and steno posts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana often ask for typewriting in English and Telugu. The usual qualification is the Government Technical Examination in typewriting (lower or higher grade), and some courts and departments also run their own skill test on a computer. The test time is commonly 5 to 15 minutes on a printed passage, and some tests don't allow Backspace.

Speed, duration, the Telugu keyboard and the marking rules change between notifications. Always check the official notification for your exam.

To rehearse exam-style marking with gross and net speed and a pass/fail verdict, use the government exam typing test. For Telugu itself, practise here in Paragraph mode with a 10 minute timer, and pair it with the English typing test if your post needs both.

Telugu typing practice plan

  1. Week 1: home row lessons only. Learn ో ే ్ ి ు with the left hand and ప ర క త చ ట with the right.
  2. Week 2: top and bottom rows, then vattulu. Take one 1 minute test a day to see progress.
  3. Week 3 onward: one 5 minute test and one Paragraph test a day. Click "Practise weak keys" after each result to open typing practice with words built from your slowest letters.

Try the easy-to-read font in Settings if Telugu vowel signs are hard to tell apart on your screen. Keyboard sounds and the night or high-contrast themes are there too.

How to do Telugu typing on a computer, laptop or mobile

This page is a Telugu typing website that works straight away: keep Inscript selected and use your English keys, with nothing to install on your PC or laptop. To type Telugu in other programs, set up a keyboard once:

  • Telugu typing for Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows 7: add Telugu in the language settings and choose the Telugu Inscript keyboard. Switch with Windows+Space. The same Telugu typing keyboard then works for MS Word, Excel, WhatsApp Desktop and every other program on your PC.
  • Telugu typing for Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → add Telugu (Inscript or QWERTY).
  • Telugu typing from English letters: Google Input Tools and similar phonetic tools let you type Telugu in English and convert as you go. It is easy, but slower than a real Telugu keyboard once you can touch type.
  • Telugu typing on mobile and in WhatsApp: add Telugu in Gboard or your phone's keyboard app. On a phone or tablet this test switches to your own keyboard automatically. Telugu voice typing is handy for chats, but it is not something a typing test can measure.

Any Unicode Telugu font, such as Noto Sans Telugu, Gautami or Ramabhadra, shows the same text, so your practice carries over to every program and online font.
