Bengali typing test: check your Bangla typing speed

Type a Bangla passage in Unicode and see your words per minute, accuracy and the keys that slow you down. Use the built-in Inscript layout on any English keyboard, or switch to your own Bengali keyboard.

This Bengali typing test gives you real Bangla sentences and measures how fast and how cleanly you type them. In Bengali it is simply called a বাংলা টাইপিং টেস্ট or a typing speed test (টাইপিং গতি পরীক্ষা). You don't need to install anything: the built-in Inscript layout turns an ordinary English keyboard into a Bangla keyboard, and the on-screen keyboard shows every letter, vowel sign and conjunct key. It works in any browser on a PC, laptop or phone, and it is free with no sign-up.

Bijoy, Avro or Inscript: which Bangla keyboard does this test use?

Bangla typists learn on three very different systems, and it helps to know which one you are using before you take a Bangla typing test online.

  • Bijoy (Bijoy Bayanno, Bijoy Classic). The most common layout in Bangladesh offices. Older Bijoy Classic setups type into ANSI fonts such as SutonnyMJ, which are not Unicode, so the letters they produce look right on screen but are different characters underneath.
  • Avro. A free phonetic keyboard: you type ami and get আমি. Avro outputs Unicode, and it also has fixed layouts.
  • Inscript. The Government of India standard, used on Windows as "Bangla (India) – Inscript" and common in West Bengal and Tripura offices. Every Indian script shares its key positions, so if you know Hindi Inscript you already know where most Bangla letters live.

This site offers built-in Inscript (Unicode) and your own keyboard. For a Bangla typing test with Avro, choose "My own Bengali keyboard" in the Keyboard menu and type as usual. For a Bangla typing test with Bijoy, switch Bijoy to its Unicode mode first (newer Bijoy Bayanno versions have one). If Bijoy is still writing SutonnyMJ ANSI text, every letter will be marked wrong, because the test text is Unicode.

Want to learn Inscript from scratch? Open typing lessons and pick "Bengali – Inscript" in the Course menu. The lessons start on the home row and add two keys at a time.

The Inscript Bangla keyboard: home row and key tricks

Rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. In Bengali Inscript the home row gives you the most common vowel signs under the left hand and common consonants under the right:

KeyASDFGHJKL;'
Normalি
Shift

The pattern is easy to remember: the unshifted key gives a vowel sign (কার) or an unaspirated consonant, and Shift gives the full vowel or the aspirated pair (ক → খ, ত → থ, চ → ছ). On the top row, E gives া and Shift+E gives আ; Y gives ব and U gives হ. On the bottom row, X is anusvara ং (Shift+X is chandrabindu ঁ), C is ম, V is ন, N is ল and M is স.

Hasanta, conjuncts and vowel signs

  • Hasanta (্) is on D. Type consonant + ্ + consonant to build a juktakkhor: ক ্ ত gives ক্ত, ন ্ ত gives ন্ত.
  • Shortcut conjuncts on the number row with Shift: Shift+7 ক্ষ, Shift+5 জ্ঞ, Shift+3 র-ফলা (্র), Shift+4 রেফ (র্).
  • Ya-phala is ্ followed by য (the / key). য় is Shift+/. ড় and ঢ় are ড or ঢ followed by the nukta key ].
  • Type the vowel sign after the consonant. ি, ে and ৈ are drawn to the left of the letter, but in Unicode you always type the consonant first: ক then ি gives কি. If you learned to type the kar first, as many typewriter-style layouts allow, this is the habit to retrain.

The rare খণ্ড-ত (ৎ) has its own key on the built-in layout: press \ (above Enter).

How your Bangla typing speed is measured

The result screen uses the standard formula, so a Bengali score can be compared with an English one:

Net WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

Every Unicode character counts, including vowel signs and the hasanta, plus the space after each correct word. So আমি is three characters (আ ম ি), and ক্ষমা is five (ক ্ ষ ম া). Raw WPM counts everything you typed, mistakes included, and CPM is simply characters per minute.

Worked example: in a 5 minute Bangla typing test you type 700 correct characters and 740 characters in total. Net speed is (700 ÷ 5) ÷ 5 = 28 WPM, raw speed is (740 ÷ 5) ÷ 5 = about 30 WPM, and your CPM is 700 ÷ 5 = 140.

What is a good Bangla typing speed?

Bangla uses more keystrokes per word than English because of kars and conjuncts, so the same person usually types it a little slower. Typical figures:

LevelBangla (WPM)What it means
Beginnerabout 5–15Still looking for keys and kars
Office useabout 20–30Enough for letters, forms and most job typing tests
Goodabout 30–40Comfortable touch typing with few mistakes
Fast40+Professional data entry and composing speed

For comparison, the average WPM for typing English is around 40 for adults. So is typing 53 WPM good? In English it is above average; in Bangla, 53 WPM with 95%+ accuracy is fast. Aim for accuracy first: 95% or better, and 98% before an exam.

Bangla typing tests for jobs and exams

Typing tests in Bengali are common in both West Bengal and Bangladesh:

  • West Bengal and Tripura. Some clerical, typist and court recruitments include a typewriting or computer typing test in English or Bengali. The speed, time and whether Backspace is allowed differ by recruiting body.
  • Bangladesh. Many government job circulars for posts such as office assistant cum computer typist ask for a minimum speed in Bangla and English, often about 20–25 words per minute each. The test is usually typed in Bijoy or Unicode, as the board decides.

Rules change between notices and years. Always check the official notice or circular for the exact speed, duration, font and keyboard your exam uses.

To rehearse a no-Backspace, fixed-time exam and get a pass/fail verdict, try the government exam typing test as well. For Bangla, use Paragraph mode here with the 10 minute timer to copy the length of a real Bangla typing test exam.

Bangla typing test practice for beginners

If you are just starting, this plan takes about 20 minutes a day:

  1. Five minutes of lessons. Learn the home row first, then the top row with the aspirated consonants. Use all 10 fingers from day one; a Bangla typing test with 10 fingers always beats hunt-and-peck in the long run.
  2. A 1 minute test. A Bangla typing test of 60 seconds shows your warm-up speed and which keys you miss. Move up to a Bangla typing test of 3 minutes or 5 minutes once you stop looking at the keys.
  3. Weak-key drill. Press "Practise weak keys" on the result screen. It opens typing practice with words built from the letters you keep missing.
  4. One 5 or 10 minute paragraph. Longer tests build stamina for real exams. If you want a Bangla typing test for 30 minutes, run three 10 minute tests back to back and compare them.

Want a Bangla typing test with no time limit? Choose Paragraph mode: the timer runs, but the test ends only when you finish the passage, so there is no rush. For a playful change, the typing games work in Bengali too.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Typing ি or ে before the consonant out of old typewriter habit.
  • Mixing up ো (A) and ে (S), or া (E) and ্ (D), which sit next to each other.
  • Looking down at the keys. Use the on-screen keyboard instead; it lights up the next key and colours it by finger.

How to type Bangla on a computer, laptop or phone (bangla typing kivabe korbo)

Here, in the browser: nothing to install. Keep the Keyboard menu on Inscript and press the English keys; Bangla appears.

In Word, WhatsApp or any app on Windows: open Settings → Time & language → Language & region, add Bangla, and pick the Bangla Inscript keyboard. Switch with Windows+Space. Avro and Google Input Tools are other popular Bangla typing software options, and both type Unicode.

On a Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → add Bangla. macOS includes both a Bangla Inscript and a Bangla QWERTY (phonetic) layout.

On a phone: add Bangla in Gboard or your phone's keyboard. The test switches to your own keyboard automatically on touch screens. Gboard can also do Bangla voice typing, but voice input is not measured by a typing test.

Any Unicode Bangla font, such as Noto Sans Bengali, Kalpurush or Nirmala UI, shows the same text; SutonnyMJ and other Bijoy ANSI fonts do not.

Save your result and get a certificate

Every result is saved in your browser on the My progress page, with your best speed, streak and per-key stats. When you are happy with a score, open the typing certificate generator to download a free Bangla typing test certificate as PNG or PDF. It shows the language, WPM, accuracy and date from your own result.

Bengali Typing Test: frequently asked questions

Is this Bangla typing test free?
Yes. The Bengali typing test, lessons, games and certificate are free, with no sign-up. Your results stay in your own browser.
Can I use Bijoy for this Bangla typing test?
Yes, if Bijoy is set to Unicode output. Choose "My own Bengali keyboard" in the Keyboard menu and type. Bijoy Classic writing SutonnyMJ (ANSI) text will not match the Unicode passage.
Can I take the test with Avro?
Yes. Avro types Unicode, so pick "My own Bengali keyboard" and use Avro phonetic or any Avro fixed layout.
Where is the hasanta on the Inscript keyboard?
The hasanta (্) is on the D key. Type consonant, then D, then the next consonant to make a conjunct such as ক্ত or ন্ত.
What is a good speed for a Bengali typing test?
About 20–30 WPM is enough for most office jobs, 30–40 WPM is good, and 40+ WPM is fast. Keep accuracy at 95% or higher.

It is usually written টাইপিং টেস্ট, or টাইপিং গতি পরীক্ষা (typing speed test). It checks how many words per minute you type and how accurately.
Can I practise Bangla typing on a laptop without a Bangla keyboard?
Yes. The built-in Inscript layout maps Bangla letters onto a normal English keyboard, and the on-screen keyboard shows where every letter is. No stickers or software needed.
Does it work for English to Bengali typing tests?
For exams that test both, take this Bangla test and then the English typing test in the same session, so you practise switching between the two.
