This Dutch typing test gives you common Dutch words and everyday sentences – gewoon, eigenlijk, samen, vandaag – so you practise the letter patterns you actually type in Dutch emails and reports. In Dutch it is simply a typetest, touch typing is blind typen, and a typing course is a typecursus. The test is free (gratis), runs in any browser and needs no account – a simple online type speed test and typetester for anyone who writes Dutch.

What makes typing Dutch different

Dutch uses the plain Latin alphabet, so you need no special keys for most text. What makes it distinctive is how the letters combine:

  • Double vowels. aa, ee, oo, uu appear constantly – maar, heel, zoon, uur. Typing the same key twice quickly and evenly is a Dutch skill of its own.
  • The ij. Dutch treats ij almost as one letter (mijn, tijd, blij), but on a keyboard it is two keys: i with the right middle finger, then j with the right index finger. That roll becomes very fast with practice.
  • sch and ch. school, schrijven, echt, nacht – short, frequent clusters worth drilling.
  • Long compounds. ziekenhuisopname or verjaardagsfeest reward typing in syllables instead of letter by letter.

Dutch does use a few marks – the trema in ideeën and geïnteresseerd, and accents for stress as in één – but the texts in this typetest nederlands stick to plain letters, so any keyboard works without extra setup.

Which keyboard do Dutch speakers use?

The Netherlands and Belgium type on different keyboards, and both work here:

  • The Netherlands: QWERTY with US-International. Most Dutch computers have a US QWERTY keyboard set to "United States-International". There, ' and " are dead keys: ' then e gives é, and " then e gives ë.
  • Belgium (Flanders): Belgian AZERTY. The letters sit where they do on French AZERTY – A and Q swapped, Z and W swapped, M next to L – with a slightly different number row.

Because Dutch needs no extra letters, the test takes whatever your own keyboard types; there is no layout to choose. The on-screen keyboard shows QWERTY with each key coloured by finger. If you type on AZERTY you can switch the on-screen keyboard off in the settings.

On US-International the quote keys wait for the next key. Type a quotation mark before a word that starts with a vowel – "een" – and you get ëen. Press " or ', then Space, to get the plain mark.

How do you do a Dutch typing test?

Put your fingers on the home row, click the text, and type what you see; the timer starts with your first key. When time is up the result screen shows your speed and accuracy. Dutch typing schools often count aanslagen per minuut (keystrokes per minute); here you get that as characters per minute, next to words per minute:

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Aanslagen per minuut ≈ correct characters ÷ minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

Worked example: in a 30 second typetest you type 135 characters and 130 are correct. Half a minute is 0.5 minutes, so your speed is (130 ÷ 5) ÷ 0.5 = 52 WPM and your raw speed is (135 ÷ 5) ÷ 0.5 = 54 WPM. Your accuracy is 130 ÷ 135 ≈ 96.3%, and your pace is 260 aanslagen per minuut.

Blind typen oefenen: a free online typing course

Blind typen online gratis learning works best in small steps, whether you follow a blind typen online cursus or teach yourself. The typing lessons page is a free typecursus that starts on the home row and adds two keys at a time, with stop-on-error and stars for speed and accuracy. Dutch uses the English QWERTY course, which also works as a typecursus engels if you type English at work; for blind typen oefenen gratis on AZERTY, choose the AZERTY course, whose letter keys match the Belgian keyboard, so its blind typen oefeningen on AZERTY carry straight over. For a typecursus with dyslexia (typecursus en dyslexie), switch on the easy-to-read font in the settings and use a larger text size. Looking for an eenhandige typecursus (one-handed typing)? The lessons here assume two hands, but the typetest itself does not care how you type, so you can still measure your one-handed speed and track it over time.

  1. Learn the home row by touch before speed.
  2. Drill ij, sch, aa, ee, oo until they flow.
  3. Take three short tests a day, then one longer test a week – short, regular type test online practice beats rare long sessions.
  4. Use "Practise weak keys" after each result.
