Vietnamese typing test: kiểm tra tốc độ gõ tiếng Việt

This Vietnamese typing test measures how fast you type real Tiếng Việt – with every tone mark and every special letter. In Vietnamese it is a kiểm tra tốc độ gõ tiếng Việt, a check of your typing speed on the computer (kiểm tra tốc độ gõ máy tính). The test is free, runs in your browser, and works with the Vietnamese keyboard you already use, whether that is Telex, VNI, Unikey or your phone keyboard.

Why typing Vietnamese is special

Vietnamese uses the Latin alphabet, but almost every word carries marks. There are seven modified letters – ă â ê ô ơ ư đ – and five tone marks on top of the vowels:

A standard keyboard has none of these characters, so Vietnamese is typed through an input method that turns ordinary key sequences into marked letters. Two methods dominate:

• Telex uses letters: aa → â, aw → ă, ee → ê, oo → ô, ow → ơ, uw → ư, dd → đ, and the tone letters s f r x j. "Việt" is typed vieejt.
• VNI uses the number row: 6 adds the hat (â ê ô), 7 the horn (ơ ư), 8 the breve (ă), 9 makes đ, and 1–5 are the tones. "Việt" is typed vie65t.

Telex is the more common choice because your hands never leave the letter keys; VNI suits people who learned it at school. Both produce the same text, so the test accepts either. Without an input method you could only type plain Tieng Viet with no marks, and this typing test would count every unmarked vowel as an error.

How to type Vietnamese in this test

There is no built-in Vietnamese layout on this site, because Vietnamese needs an input method rather than a different keyboard. Turn on the one you normally use and type as you always do; the test reads the finished letters. Any of these work:

• Windows 10 and 11: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → add Vietnamese, then choose the Telex or number-key (VNI) keyboard. Switch with Win + Space.
• macOS: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → add Vietnamese (Telex, Simple Telex or VNI).
• Unikey or EVKey: the classic free tools; set the input method to Telex or VNI and the character set to Unicode.
• Phones: Gboard (Vietnamese, Telex or VNI) or Laban Key – useful for a kiểm tra tốc độ gõ phím điện thoại (phone typing test).

Always set your input tool to Unicode. Old encodings such as TCVN3 (ABC) or VNI-Windows produce different characters, and every marked letter will be counted as a mistake.

The on-screen keyboard shows the plain QWERTY keys coloured by finger, with animated hands for the next key, so you can still learn touch typing while you practise the marks. Those typing fingers work the same for Tiếng Việt as for English: the colour tells you which finger owns each letter and each Telex tone key.

How your Vietnamese typing speed is measured

The test counts the letters that appear on screen, not the keys you pressed to make them. Typing "ế" in Telex takes three keys (ees) but counts as one character. That is why a Vietnamese score is usually lower than your English score even when your fingers move just as fast.

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

Example. In a 2-minute test you produce 400 characters and 380 are correct. Speed = 380 ÷ 5 ÷ 2 = 38 WPM. Raw speed = 400 ÷ 5 ÷ 2 = 40 WPM. Accuracy = 380 ÷ 400 = 95%. CPM = 380 ÷ 2 = 190 characters per minute.

The typing test results screen also shows consistency (how even your speed was), a per-second speed chart, and the words you got wrong – often a missing tone mark rather than a wrong letter.

What is a good Vietnamese typing speed?

For comparison, the typing average test result for adults in English is about 40 WPM. These are typical ranges for Telex or VNI on a physical keyboard, not official standards. Aim for 95% accuracy or better at every level.

For perspective on the top end: the fastest typists in the world (gõ phím nhanh nhất thế giới) reach well over 150 WPM in English, but they got there through years of daily practice, not tricks.

Tips for a faster Vietnamese typing test (gõ phím nhanh hơn)

1. Type the tone at the end of the word. Modern Telex and VNI let you put the tone key after the whole syllable ("tieengs" → tiếng). Your fingers finish the letters first and add the tone in one rhythm.
2. Learn ten-finger typing first. A 10-finger typing test in Vietnamese rewards touch typists most. Telex tone letters (s f r x j) are all home-row or near-home-row keys. With fingers on A S D F and J K L ;, tones become tiny movements. The touch typing lessons teach the home row step by step.
3. Check marks before speed. Most mistakes are a wrong or missing tone, not a wrong letter. Slow down until your accuracy is above 95%.
4. Practise short and often. Take two or three 1-minute tests a day and one longer test a week. Use the keys-to-practise list to open a drill in typing practice.
5. Test your keyboard. If a key misses or double-types, run the keyboard test before blaming your fingers.

Luyện gõ 10 ngón: touch typing in Vietnamese

What does "typing" mean in Vietnamese (typing tiếng Việt là gì)? It is gõ phím or đánh máy, and ten-finger touch typing is gõ 10 ngón. Fast typing – gõ phím nhanh – comes from using all ten fingers, not from moving two fingers faster.
