The Mangal typing test on this page is a Hindi typing test on the Inscript keyboard, the layout that produces Unicode text in the Mangal font. Most government offices, the MP CPCT exam and SSC accept it, and it is the layout Windows installs as "Hindi Traditional". You can practise it free, in any browser, on the English keyboard you already own.
What is Mangal typing?
Mangal is a font, not a keyboard. Microsoft ships it with Windows as its standard Unicode Devanagari font, so Hindi typed in Mangal can be read on any computer or phone and pasted into email, MS Word or a website without turning into gibberish. Because Mangal is Unicode, you type it with a Unicode keyboard – almost always Inscript. That is why exam notices say "Mangal (Inscript)" and why people search for a "Mangal font typing test" when they really mean Inscript practice.
This site types the same Unicode characters. The font on your screen may look a little different from Mangal, but the letters, matras and conjuncts are identical, so the skill carries straight over to the exam computer.
Mangal font typing chart: the Inscript keyboard
Here is the full Inscript layout as it maps to an English keyboard. The on-screen keyboard in the test shows the same chart, colours each key by the finger that should press it, and highlights the next key you need.

The logic that makes Inscript easy to learn
- Vowels on the left, consonants on the right. Your left hand types matras (ा ि ी ु ू े ै ो ौ), your right hand types most consonants, so Hindi syllables alternate hands naturally.
- Shift gives the related letter. On a matra key, Shift gives the full vowel: E is ा and Shift+E is आ. On a consonant key, Shift gives the aspirated pair: क/ख, ग/घ, त/थ, द/ध, च/छ, ज/झ, ट/ठ, ड/ढ, प/फ, ब/भ.
- One halant key. D types ् (halant), which joins two consonants into a half letter.
Letters such as ऒ, ऎ, ऱ, ऩ and ऴ exist for other Indian languages and almost never appear in Hindi passages, so you can ignore them at first.
How to type in Mangal font: words, matras and half letters
In Inscript you type Hindi in the order you say it: consonant first, then its matra. These examples cover the patterns that trip up most learners:

Full stop in Hindi is the purna viram । on Shift+.. Many exam passages use it, so practise it from the start.
Mangal typing test for CPCT, SSC and state exams
Most exams that test Hindi typing on a computer accept Unicode Hindi, and Inscript is the standard Unicode layout. As per recent notifications (always confirm with the official notice for your exam year):
- MP CPCT allows Hindi typing in Inscript or Remington GAIL, both Unicode, and asks for about 20 NWPM in Hindi to qualify. Practise on the CPCT typing test, which uses the 15-minute format.
- SSC CHSL lets you type Hindi in Mangal (Inscript) or Kruti Dev (Remington) and asks for 30 WPM in 10 minutes. The SSC typing test scores you with full and half mistakes.
- UPSSSC and other state exams often mention Mangal or Kruti Dev by name. Read which one your notice allows before you choose.
Some exams allow backspace and some do not. Practise both ways: normal mode here lets you correct mistakes, and the exam simulators switch backspace off when the real exam does.
How the Mangal typing test measures your speed
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Worked example. In a 10-minute Mangal font typing test you type 1,540 characters and 1,450 of them are correct. Your net speed is 1,450 ÷ 5 ÷ 10 = 29 WPM and your raw speed is 1,540 ÷ 5 ÷ 10 = 30.8 WPM. Accuracy compares correct keystrokes with all keystrokes, so if 1,520 of 1,600 key presses were right, accuracy is 95%.
Your results also show CPM, a consistency score, a speed chart across the test, and the list of Hindi keys you missed most – often ि versus ी, or a missing halant. One click turns that list into a practice drill.

If you are a complete beginner, do not skip week 1. Learners who start with paragraphs usually plateau around 15 WPM because they never learned where the keys are.
How to type Mangal font in MS Word and on your PC
To type Hindi in Mangal font outside this site on Windows 10 or 11, add Hindi as a language in Settings, choose the "Hindi Traditional" keyboard (that is Inscript), then switch keyboards with Win+Space. In MS Word, select Mangal as the font and type. The same Inscript layout also types Marathi in Unicode, so Marathi Mangal typing uses the keys you learn here.
