A 5 minute typing test tells you something a one-minute test cannot: whether you can keep your speed and accuracy up for a full passage. That is the skill employers, exam boards and real work actually need. This test is free, runs in any browser and gives you net WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, characters per minute, a consistency score and a minute-by-minute speed chart the moment the five minutes are up.
Who should take a 5 minute test?
- Job applicants. Many employment screening tests use a five-minute passage, especially for admin, receptionist, data entry and transcription roles. A free 5 minute typing test for employment practice lets you rehearse at the real length.
- Government job aspirants. Main exams such as SSC CHSL and RRB NTPC run for 10–15 minutes, and a 5 minute run is the ideal stepping stone. The MP CPCT even gives you a short unscored practice round of about 5 minutes before the real 15 minute test, as per recent notifications.
- Improvers moving through the 1, 3 and 5 minute typing test lengths, whose short-test scores look good but whose everyday typing feels slower. Five minutes shows the truth.
- Anyone who wants a certificate that reflects real, sustained speed rather than a lucky 60 seconds.
What five minutes reveals: stamina and consistency
Over five minutes your score depends less on how fast your fingers can move and more on how evenly you work. Tiny habits add up: glancing at the keyboard, stopping to stare at a mistake, tensing your shoulders. Most people type about 5–10% slower on a 5 minute typing test than on a one-minute one. Here is an illustrative example of how a typical 50 WPM typist's speed moves minute by minute:
| Minute | Speed that minute | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | about 51 WPM | Fresh and focused |
| 2 | about 49 WPM | Settling into a rhythm |
| 3 | about 47 WPM | First dip in attention; a hard word or two |
| 4 | about 45 WPM | Hands tiring, more small errors |
| 5 | about 46 WPM | A final push as the end approaches |
That typist's result would be about 48 WPM overall – a fairer number than the 51 they would get from a quick check. Your own chart will show your pattern. A steep slide means you need stamina practice; a flat line with low accuracy means you should slow down.
How to count typing words per minute over 5 minutes
We count characters, not whole words, and treat every five characters (including spaces) as one word. Then we divide by the time.
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ 5 minutes
Raw WPM = (all typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ 5 minutes
Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100
Worked example: in five minutes you type 1,210 characters and 1,150 of them are correct. Net speed = (1,150 ÷ 5) ÷ 5 = 230 ÷ 5 = 46 WPM. Raw speed = (1,210 ÷ 5) ÷ 5 = 242 ÷ 5 = about 48 WPM. You pressed 1,236 keys and 1,168 were right, so accuracy = 1,168 ÷ 1,236 = about 94.5%. CPM = 1,150 ÷ 5 = 230. Your 5 minute typing test WPM and accuracy together are the figures to quote.
Is my 5 minute score good?
Because this test is longer, compare yourself with these typical ranges rather than with one-minute scores:
| Net WPM over 5 minutes | What it means |
|---|---|
| Under 15 | Is 5 WPM good? No, but it is a normal first result if you have never learned to type. Start with lessons. |
| 15–30 | What is a good typing speed for a beginner? Anything in this range after a few weeks of practice is on track. |
| 30–39 | Around average. Is typing 36 WPM good? Yes, for everyday use. |
| 40–50 | Good. Passes most job typing tests. |
| 51–60 | Is typing 53 WPM good, even fast? Yes: it is well above average and strong for any office job. |
| 60+ | Fast and professional. |
Is typing 40 WPM hard? For a new typist, yes at first – but most people who practise touch typing for 15 minutes a day reach it within a few months. Compare your result with other groups on our average typing speed page.
How do you pass a 5 minute typing test?
If a job asks for 40 WPM, you need to score it on a bad day, not just your best one. To pass a 40 WPM typing test comfortably, practise until your five-minute average is about 45 WPM at 95% accuracy or better. Then:
- Protect accuracy first. Many employer tests subtract errors from your score, so one mistake can cost a whole word.
- Pace the first minute. Starting at full speed usually means crashing in minute four.
- Do not stop. A two-second freeze to stare at an error costs more than the error itself.
- Use the same set-up. If the real 5 minute typing test is online at home, practise on that keyboard and browser.
A 4-week practice plan for 5 minute tests
- Week 1: one 5 minute test a day, plus 10 minutes on the weak keys your result lists.
- Week 2: two 3 minute runs at a steady pace, then one 5 minute test aiming for 96% accuracy.
- Week 3: add punctuation and numbers for a harder 5 minute typing test paragraph, the style used in government jobs and office work.
- Week 4: take one test a day under real conditions and watch your progress chart. If you are heading for a 10 minute exam, move up to the 10 minute typing test.
5 minute tests for SSC, data entry and Hindi
A 5 minute typing test for SSC practice is a good daily drill, but the real SSC CHSL test lasts 10 minutes and SSC CGL's data entry test lasts 15, so finish each week with a full-length run in our government exam typing test. Always check the official notice for your exam.
By default the 5 minute typing test in English uses common everyday words, which makes it an easy start for beginners; add punctuation when you want a difficult, exam-style paragraph in English. For data entry jobs, turn on numbers: the data entry typing test is a five-minute test with numbers and punctuation built in. You can also take a 5 minute typing test in Hindi with the Mangal font layout (Inscript) or Remington GAIL, or switch to Marathi, Punjabi, Urdu, Bangla and more.

After your result, press Get certificate to download a free PNG or PDF showing your name, the test length, WPM and accuracy. Because a five-minute score is harder to fluke, it makes a more convincing certificate to share. It is generated from your own result on this site – a practice certificate, not an official qualification.
