3 minute typing test: measure the speed you can sustain

Type for three minutes and find out the speed you can actually hold – the number most job tests care about. Your result shows WPM, accuracy and where you slowed down.

Loading 3 minute typing test…

The 3 minute typing test is the length many employers, schools and certificate programmes use, because it measures the speed you can keep up rather than the speed you can hit for a few seconds. Three minutes is long enough that a fast start cannot carry you, and you can finish a 3 minute typing test while your coffee cools. It is free, works in your browser and saves your results on your own device.

Who the 3 minute test is for

  • Job applicants. Many official pre-employment checks and staffing agencies use a 3 minute typing test. Practising at the real length avoids nasty surprises.
  • Students sitting a school keyboarding assessment. A student typing test of 3 minutes is common in computer classes.
  • Touch typing learners who have finished the basic lessons and want to prove they can hold their new technique through a 3 minute test.
  • Anyone who wants a fair score to put on a CV or to track honestly over time.

What a 3 minute typing test shows that 1 minute cannot

How fast can you type in a minute, and how much of that speed survives three? In the first minute most people type near their best. By the third minute, small things start to add up: a moment of lost focus, a tense forearm, a run of hard words. A 3 minute typing test rewards steady hands more than fast fingers, and that is exactly why employers like it.

Expect your 3 minute speed to be a few WPM below your 1 minute speed – a drop of about 2–5 WPM is typical. If the gap is bigger than 10%, your technique is working against you: you are probably tensing up or looking down at the keys. The speed chart on your result makes this easy to see, and the consistency score puts a number on it.

How the 3 minute typing test result is calculated

Like every test on this site, one word equals five characters, including spaces.

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ 3 minutes

CPM = correct characters ÷ 3 minutes

Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all keystrokes × 100

CPM is simply the characters per minute behind your typing score, before the ÷ 5 step.

Worked example: over three minutes you type 735 characters, and 690 are correct. Net speed = (690 ÷ 5) ÷ 3 = 138 ÷ 3 = 46 WPM. Raw speed = (735 ÷ 5) ÷ 3 = 147 ÷ 3 = 49 WPM. CPM = 690 ÷ 3 = 230. You pressed 750 keys and 700 were right, so accuracy = 700 ÷ 750 = about 93.3%. With 97% accuracy at the same raw pace, your net score would be close to 48 WPM.

What is a good typing test score over 3 minutes?

What is the average words per minute on a typing test this long? For adults it is about 40 WPM. Use these typical bands to judge your 3 minute typing test result:

Net WPMRatingGood for
Under 30LearningPersonal use; keep practising
30–39FairIs typing 36 or 37 WPM good? It is close to average and fine for daily work
40–49GoodIs typing 40 WPM good? Yes – it passes most office typing tests
50–69Very goodIs typing 53 WPM good? Yes: data entry, admin and assistant roles

So what is a good typing test speed? Anything at or above the average is a solid start. How many WPM to pass a typing test? Most office jobs ask for 35–45 WPM at 95% accuracy or better, so 40+ over three minutes puts you in a safe position. For more benchmarks, see average typing speed by age and job.

A 3 minute practice plan: build stamina in two weeks

The goal is to shrink the gap between your one-minute speed and your three-minute speed. This free 3 minute typing test practice plan takes about 20 minutes, five days a week:

  1. Find your target pace: take one 1 minute test and note the score.
  2. Controlled run: take a 3 minute typing test aiming for 90% of that pace, with 97% accuracy.
  3. Weak keys: spend five minutes drilling the letters your result flagged.
  4. Second run: another three-minute test, this time holding the same pace from start to finish.
  5. Cool down: one easy minute of typing with perfect form.

When your three-minute score is within 2 WPM of your one-minute score, you are ready for the 5 minute typing test. If your technique still feels shaky, go back to the touch typing lessons for a week.

Typing test timing: how long is a typing test?

Online tests range from 15 seconds to 10 minutes or more. Job typing tests usually last 1–5 minutes, and 3 minutes is one of the most common. Government exams in India are longer – usually 10 or 15 minutes – so use the 1, 3 and 5 minute tests to build up to them. If an employer does not say how long their test is, practising with a 3 minute time limit on this typing test first is a safe bet.

Options for your 3 minute test

The default English typing test online for 3 minute runs uses common words without punctuation, so you measure pure speed. From the test bar you can:

  • Add punctuation and numbers for a harder, more realistic 3 minute typing test paragraph in English.
  • Turn on numbers to see how many numbers per minute you manage in a typing test; for longer number work, the data entry page runs a 5 minute typing test with numbers.
  • Switch languages, for example to Hindi with Inscript (Mangal) or Remington GAIL, or any of 40+ others.
  • Turn on the on-screen keyboard, coloured by finger, to check your hand position while you type.
  • Use stop-on-error to force yourself to fix every mistake, or blind mode to stop watching them.

Can you take a typing test online and get proof of it? Yes – after the test, press Get certificate for a free PNG or PDF with your 3 minute speed and accuracy. It is made from your own result on this site, so it is a practice certificate, not an official one.
